I read a thread recently about astrology, about if we believed it was real or not. I think that approach is not correct and creates more confusion than clarity.
I believe that it doesn't matter if astrology is real or not.
Just like with religion, does it really matter if Christ was real? If Buddha existed? or if any of that is "real"?
Astrology is not fortune-telling, it doesn't try and chain a fate upon you unless you choose to go along with that fate. Astrology is a guide of the soul, it is there to help you to find yourself and who you are.
Astrology is not a religion that tries to take responsibility off of who you are, instead it is a tool that illumniates that responsibility, magnifies it. You are free-willed entirely, you always have the last choice in what you do, always.
It doesn't matter if astrology is actually real, even if it isn't, it still helps you to have a guide into the introspection of who you are and what you do, and with that, you can grow into the person you truly want to be.
An example. Yesterday I quit my job. I had been reading some transits which described a break from things that were not good for me. It doesn't matter if that transit only existed in my head, or if it was actually there, in the end it still helped me to do what I knew was right for who I was. Even if it was just a made up transit, it still helped me to be true to who I am.
I do not recall ever implying that. I asked if it mattered, not if he did or did not exist.
What I was saying was that regardless if Astrology is real, I believe an indepth look can help you to find things inside of you that you may not have known before. In that sense, just like with religion. Even if Buddha, Christ, did not exist, the words written, the wisdom does exist and does have value. So the same for the transits, even if they are made up, still have value in helping you to understand your inner workings.
The principle of Christ is for people that are not jews can be saved by God. It has nothing to do with what you feel is good for your soul. His sacrifice is the gateway to heaven, so for Christians it WOULD matter if he was real or not. So it does matter.
If you believe that only your belief matters, then by all means pick and choose what you want without really saying 'you made a decision.'
I can not see how you claim astrology is useful to understand yourself without taking a stand in whether astrology is real or not. Sounds more like people who take things when they like it and disregard it when they don't.
Words by themselves do not have value unless it is written or spoken by a person others hold in high regard. If Christians learned that Christ was never real, there would definitely be noticeable changes. Yet, there are some Christians that view things the same way you do. They believe sometimes and other times when they don't like the answer, they choose not to believe.

The value of words and the meaning behind them stands only on how they are percieved and used by the party that notices them.
I can see the value in something, even if I disagree with it somewhat, because I am not a person who throws out the baby with the bathwater.
I can see the value in a stated transit "Mars Square Sun" even if it isn't really happening, it could give me the chance to look inside myself and see if there is a conflict between actions and self and find a solution that would help me out, it doesn't necessarily have to be true. In the end I am the authority of my own life, astrology, religion, none of that matters above the self and it's perception of itself.
By the way, this discussion has nothing to do with Christianity, it was merely an example. Please keep your defense of it off here, because it isn't even being threatened. I used it to point out that the message behind it, such as the golden rule are valuable irregardless of anything else, whether the religion is real or not. The same for Buddhism, and other religions.
I was using christianity as an example Wings. I am not a christian, but I can appreciate people's beliefs. If I was a christian, however, I could see why they would have a problem with your careless example. No need to feel too threatened or we won't stay on the topic.
What I write is an opinion, nothing more nothing less. I won't waste my time telling people what to think. I do however, enjoy discussions with people who believe in something.
Thanks for posting the logical fallacy site. I rather enjoy seeing what people hold as important. Since everything discussion can be argued from both sides, it's hard for me to just admit I am wrong. How much weight do you hold on 'logical fallacy'? You mentioned personal growth as important, but you seem ill willed to accept other's train of thought. Now you give me a definition that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that I am wrong. OK. I am wrong, but that doesn't mean I agree with it. A book with words means nothing unless someone reads it.

People see what what they want to see. You may enjoy many aspects of astrology. You may even believe there is really something about birth charts, because it represents your personality. My question is why do you even bother? Why waste your time in something you neither believe nor think has value? You say that by paying attention to astrology, you still have a choice in the matter on whether you will use it for your benefit or not. There is no difference than a stranger telling you that you will have a bad day.
It seems you really believe in control and by that I mean choice. It can be difficult to think there is something out there limiting this mode of thinking. Like I said, you see what you want to see.
I bother because I feel it has meaning. I never stated I did not believe in astrology, nor did I ever imply such a thing. I was stating that whether it actually is or is not is not as important as the messages and concepts within it and how they relate to who I am and who I want to be.
I can see it's usefulness, irregardless of the reality of whether there really are transits, aspects and so on.
