Sometimes Pisces people need time alone to converge into theirselves for introspection, and in so doing, it's not uncommon for them to make a break from their partners to do this.
The positive side is, he said, "he still believed we could be happy again and he would have hope for the future" .... certainly, this doesn't sound like The Fish swimming away. When they swim, it's normally done without such sentiment of the future and happiness together.
It sounds to me like once he's done his Fishy thing down in his depths (which is quite normal for Pisces) ... he'll resurface again.

after 9 months of dating we broke up this past sunday. my partner has often changed his mind, as is typical of pisces, but has never brought up breaking up until this sunday. he made this decision after a week and said he no longer believed i was the girl for him. however he made several contradictory statements such as, saying he still believed we could be happy again and he would have hope for the future though for now he believes i am not the one for him! weird, to have hope for later if i'm decisively not the one.
