I like Keyshia Cole to. It seems like every song she sings stems from past pain & the experiences she actually went through. When I listen to her music I feel that I am getting to know her versus some other artists who went "Hollywood" on us & have no kind of attachment to their own music. She's no Whitney Houston (as far as vocal chords go) but she sings from the heart & for that reason alone I respect her as an artist.
"but what happens when she finally gets happy in her life..Will she still be able to sustain like Mary J. Blidge"
Good point. But hey, I think what happend with alot of artists is they ran out of stuff to talk about b/c sharing their own personal stories got "old" & all the fans were kind of like, "We get it! You got hurt. Now you're making a song about it, but now you're a millionare now & have plenty of better men chasing you so now what?" But then again, I think the fact that she's established her own unique & different voice from other artists is something we will still hear in her music years on down the road. I'm sure her song topics/subjects will change, but I don't think it'd be wise for her to lose that uniqueness about her voice b/c it was that "pain" in her voice that drew others in from the beginning. I'm glad she didn't go "hollywood" on us. She's not very versatile in what she can sing. She's kind of stuck with the "scorned woman" kind of songs just like Morris Chestnut kind of got stuck with doing the "fine black man" roles.
One thing I can say is that no one can sing her songs like her. Vocally, it'd be very hard for another artist or just a regular person to sound like her & I think that's why everyone finds her so unique. She reminds me Alicia Keys. No one can do her songs better than she can. Not even Beyonce (even though Beyonce is killing her vocally lol)
Plus, she grew up in the hood all her life & that's something she'll always remember & therefore reference her songs to. I think she's screwed either way sometimes. If she keeps singing about the same ole' "pain" things, she'll lose some of her fans who want to see her bring something "new" to the table. But then again, if she starts to change what made her such a success, she'll still lose the fans who didn't mind listening to her pain over & over again.
50 cent def. went hollywood on us. In the beginning of his rap career, everyone clinged to him b/c we all identify with artists who have their own personal story (you know the whole 'shot 9 times' thing). And now that he's making songs about "candy shops" he lost alot of his fans who were actually okay with his "hood" songs even though he clearly moved out of the ghetto. But he was smart. He involved himself into the clothing, shoes, fragrance & vitamin water industry so he gained alot of those fans back that he lost when he went "hollywood" on us.
