There are so many myths about Libra, I'm not sure which (or if any) of them are true. Someone around here may know far more about this than I do, but here's some of what I've heard over the years:

(1). Virgo-Libra-Scorpio were once considered one entity. From here it gets subdivided into at least two other categories:

(a). Virgo and Scorpio were once one sign (hence both "M's" or "serpents" as their glyph--one with an internal 'feminine' curve, the other with an outward phallic tail - you get bonus points for guessing which goes with what!) Libra was discovered, and separated the two.

(b). The scales of Libra were originally the "claws" of the scorpion, or something to this extent.

(2). There was once a woman with a wheat chafe in one hand, and a pair of scales in another. The former, if you hadn't guessed, is supposed to be Virgo. They kept the former, and removed the scales from the other hand.

(3). Sometimes, you will notice a woman with a blindfold, with a pair of scales in one hand, and a sword in another. Other times, this is alternated with a male figure, and often without the blindfold and sword.

As far as being represented by an inanimate object, this could perhaps signify the seemingly impossible standards Libras would like themselves, and possible others, to live up to. Perhaps, they think, weigh and analyze more than anyone else. It could also signify how cold and callous they can become, especially if it concerns matters of justice (Saturn, the "cold" planet is also strongly configured in Libra, as it's in exaltation.)

That's probably only the tip of the iceberg.

^oh ya!
And inanimate things are more perfect than animate things.. if you ask me to think of something animate that captures the essence of libra, I don't think there's any.

Also, they're but symbols, and to catch the symbolic meaning behind the scales you can't focus too much on the physical reasoning. Libra represents ideals, concepts, like justice, balance, etc. And only in looking from the conceptual point of view can you see the beauty that is represented by her venus.

Bal999, that was so interesting to read (I once heard that Aries and Libra changed places...forget exactly how it was presented to me). For some reason your last paragraph is profound to me.
