i want to know your take on this:
can being raised in a predominantly male environment cause girls/women to be aggressive??

take me for example, i have 3 brothers. although my parents were divorced(i lived with my mom) i spent a lot of time at my dad's house. he had 4 of his brothers (my uncles) living there. i would hang out there, watch the games on tv (football, basketball, rugby, soccer, baseball) , play cards( poker, etc), horseshoes, craps, dominoes...well you get my point.

now (grown woman) i work in the engineering field. at my job there are 27 male engineers and 3 female engineers. of the 3 females its me(american),Sharon(UK) and Mable (canadian). although we are from different countries, we were all raised around mostly men. the guys at work call us aggressive.
but in the engineering field you have to be, some of the guys are real jerks. try to take credit for your work etc..

post please & thank you....

Na I grew up with two brothers.... One talks about farts more than I care to hear but I still wear dresses and act like a lady in public.

Working with more men than women doesn't make you a Tom boy or anything!?

Neither does playing poker. The OP should correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she's referring more to gender role stereotypes, of which we all recognize (and dismiss) as such.

yes, i am talking about gender role stereotypes. because this dick at work said for me to be the chief engineer and to only have my fellow fem_engins on the project with me. we must be the most aggressive women in the engineering field. i know that sounds like a compliment kind of..but in the engineering world he was calling us tomboys/sluts. i am far from being tomboyish and my days as a slut are over. i can chill with the guys yes but i also like to go shopping with the girls.

my friends/coworker and i was just wondering about this. because they are forever calling us that, 'aggressive'. and that is the reason that i didnt pick any of them to work on this project with me. but i have to hire one guy grrr...i'm already grinding my teeth about it.

so we (my coworkers and I) had a question and i posted it here. thanks for responding

Not completely, some women are just aggressive and crass, not saying chemengin is, I was thinking more the 'ladette' types that were popular late 90s onwards.
By all means try and act like a guy if you want, but you're not at the end of the day lol.

thats true, when i was an intern my boss was like that. she used to meet the guys at the bar, always bragging that she can drink them under the table. then come to work looking like a hot mess crying in the bathroom.

so basically here if you are in what is supposedly a male dominated field. you didn't get there because you are as smart or smarter than them you got there because you are either, a lesbian, tomboy, slut, or your an a aggressive female.

which is bull well in our case. i cant speak for every women in this field.

Weird. people are far more complex when it comes to reality.

Guess what, there were girls at my high school who were known by their aggressiveness, being good with basketball and sports stuff, changing their boyfriend like their panties, smoking, drinking alcohol, obsessed with flashy fashionable clothes and wearing lots of make up, skipping classes.....BUT they obviously never had interest in math or any academics....and few of them are pregnant now,so........

Should I call them feminine OR tomboy? *scratches head*

Aaaand OP, why did you/some people come to think that women who are in engineering fields must behave all like men?

i didnt say we must behave like men. that is the stereotype. basically engineering is a dominated by men...still is these days. and women are not always welcomed. because if you are in this field and your female, then these stereotypes are placed upon you. and its stupid.
