For those of you who have ever wanted to live work abroad for up-to 2 years, get paid while doing it, look into English Teaching Assistantships.

You do not have to be a US citizen to take advantage. The Assistantship programs are on a country-by-country basis. In general, if you are 20-30 years of age and English is your first language, you may be eligible. In some cases, you are expected to have some degree of proficiency in the host country's language. For France I believe it is 3 courses for US applicants but you'll need to verify.

So if you know of someone who might interested in going abroad, pass this info along. I swear, had I known about this opportunity before I became elderly, I would've jumped at the chance.

Some of the links may not work properly so try removing everything after the .com/.org or whatever and it should take you to the correct site.

And I know the money doesn't sound like a lot. It's not but somehow, some way, most of the people I've read about thus far (who are in France) are doing ok. They're not exactly high on the hog and I'm sure many would suggest that you bring as much disposable cash as you can beforehand but I have yet to read a true horror story.

If you google "teaching assistant France blog" or some combo, you should come up with some interesting stories that are worth following and can give you and idea of what day-to-day life is life.

4thwall - do it! the fact that there are age requirements are enough to make me wanna puke. i say, if you at least do your research now, if you decide you want to apply before you get too old, at least you can hit the ground running and won't be lacking any requirements. hopefully the issue exceptions because that would be AWESOME! (TOC you got me saying that stupid word)

from what i've been reading, depending on the area you go to, it can be a headache but when is teaching children a breeze? i just want to get on the ground and hopefully that will open up other opportunities so we'll see. if i have any success, will post here.

jade that sounds amazing. wtf didn't anyone tell me about this back in school? granted, i wasn't receptive to moving at that point but i think if were aware the opportunities existed, i would've done it post graduation for sure.

south america sounds kewl. the islands would be nice as there are few french-speaking countries there. i want to be in france specifically and i know that means low pay. less than $ 1000/month is like whaaaaat?

honestly, i just want the opportunity to have some money in my pocket, get to meet people and my barrings. i know once the assistantship is over finding a job won't be cake but at least phase 1 is over.

thx jade, maybe i'll look into it. it's not really about the money. it's about the language and the location. being able to visit other countries in the EU for next to nothing is what i'm really aiming for in the long run. plus, i've always wanted to live in france...just never thought it was possible long-term. now, with a little planning, it can be.

the job is more to meet people than anything else. going at it alone means...going at it alone. with a program, you're still ass out but you'll have other people to bounce your concerns off of in the same region/neighboring areas and hopefully compare notes.

i've already looked into a working visa and that's going to be my fall back option if nothing else pans out. BUNAC offers sponsorship for up to 24 months too. so i have options. plus if i can get a "job" beforehand, i can temper any family concerns. sure, they'll be worried and i'll still do it but it helps knowing i'm not going over there to live on the streets.

on a side note...

ok, gotta run
