You're in my thoughts, those in the Philipines and their family and friends worldwide. A good friend of mine has made contact with friends there who are ok and have told her that her family was in one of the hardest areas that were damaged. Her scorp intuition is making her feel confident that they are ok even though she has not had contact with them yet. I'm following her lead on this one....🙂

For those who are thinking of helping, here are links to a few organizations that are providing aid to the most devastated:

OXFAM INTERNATIONAL

SAVE THE CHILDREN

UNITED NATIONS WORLD FOOD PROGRAM or you can donate $ 10 by texting AID to 27722

AMERICAN REDCROSS

And for our Canadian friends, donate to your local charities and the Canadian government will match it.

Thank you for posting this.

So far, they have uncovered around 2000 dead people, and the number is counting.

It's terrible.

Ands! Here's the typhoon path of Typhoon Haiyan (Typhoon Yolanda in PH):

The purple line is the path of typhoon. The hardest hit is Tacloban (in orange). The first landfall is in Guiuan, Eastern Samar. That first point the purple line first crosses is Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

I live in Daraga, Albay. It's quite close to the path of typhoon as can be seen in this map. Manila, not as much.

Yeahp, Lopez, Quezon is safe. It is close to Manila. The Quezon province is an isthmus that connects Bicol Region to the rest of Luzon. I live in Bicol Region, a peninsula to the extreme southeastern end of Luzon island, as can be seen in the map.

I have a bit of a strange question to ask. Please bear with me.

A supermarket-chain in South Africa is collecting purchases from customers to send to the Philippines.

I am unfamiliar with Filipino cuisine. I've look online and there only appears to be meat / seafood dishes. I am going to buy something non-perishable like rice. Are there any particular vegetables that are favoured?

For instance, would an average Filipino prefer legumes? If so, which varieties? Canned chickpeas?

Basically, I don't want to send something that they wouldn't like. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks.

Thank you sooo much for the intention to donate something to the perished parts of the Philippines. 🙂

As to food, rice is a safe choice. Vegies: we eat just about anything... I don't have a preference in particular but I eat rootcrops like potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. but I think I heard from the news though that they prefer something that's easy to cook (because of the difficulties they are currently facing) like canned tunas, canned sardines, etc.
