The wonderful sense of smell

The other day I was sitting in my living room when all of a sudden out of nowhere, the wonderful aroma of halloween candy was in the air (those little mary jane peanut butter candies with the black and orange wrappers in particular) and it immediately brought back memories of past halloweens.. stashing my big pillowcase chock full of m&m's, lollipops, tootsie rolls and butterfingers under my bed. And the bartering rituals with my siblings. "I'll give you two reeses for your king size snickers bar!" Hehehe.

The smell of chewing tobacco will forever bring back memories of being a little girl, riding in my fathers all black '65 chevy truck.. sitting on my dads lap, learning how to drive. No seat belts!

The smell of gasoline brings back memories of my father in his work shed, classic rock playing loudly through the stereo speakers, while he earnestly worked on building his motorcycle "Candy".. which he named after my mother —.

Nag champa incense reminds me of my very first apartment, and all the memories created therein.. the smell of my first year of adulthood.

What are some nostalgic scents that bring forth a rush of vivid memories for you?

This is going to be terrible but that smell behind all the Chinese restaurants, half being the aroma from the food and half being the trash stacking out the back reminds me of Taiwan where I spent a couple of years as a kid. Generally a polluted smell reminds me of that which is pretty bad!

DUDE I'm in Taiwan now and it's definitely changed hahahaha!!

Yeah I got so lost when I went back last year but loving the subway system soooo much easier! Should I mention the smell of "smelly tofu" then? lol

I love the sensation of nostalgia, when random sights and smells send memories flooding back into my head- and I remember how I felt long ago. Each scent has a feeling wrapped up in it- a specific feeling. Specifically on Easter, jelly-bellies and Peeps make my mind remind itself of when I was a little girl and how special everything used to be. Everything was so exciting long ago, it's a shame that things get less exciting.

So you're Taiwanese?

Oh lawd, the smelly tofu. Though I can eat it now in minuscule amounts. I love the subway system here, so clean and tech-y!

1/4 Taiwanese if that counts? I do know the languages quite well though 😄

The sweet smell of simmering jellies, leather and sweetgrass reminds me of my mother. Gun oil and cherry vanilla pipe tobacco with man musk is my father.
Anything baking is my gran. My grampa is tung oil, wood chips and foxed books.

The forest is just joy. The smell of the lake too.

Oooh, lovely.

The smell of the lake- yes yes I love! That pungent, damp smell of a mossy lake 🙂 brings back memories of being out on a dinghy with my father early in the morning fishing for bass.
