Not being an Amarican, I have a question: What's your reaction to the word 'tipi'?

I do understand that it's closely related to very serious historical events in American history, but I was still surprised (and many non-americans with me) of some very strong reactions to the existence of the word in a fictional text. The word was used first to describe the home of a character and was henceforth used as in "He went home to his tipi."

Would you feel differently if the word was 'teepee' or 'tepee'?

As an American I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Only reaction I have to the word is that it's a native American home. 🤷‍♀️

Omg I’m glad I’m not the only one. I thought I was just dumb. I was like wth does that even mean?

I was confused as to what "tipi" even ment then I was like "do they mean tepee?" Apparently "tipi" is another spelling of that word, I literally had to look it up. I've never seen it spelled that way b4 lmao 🤦‍♀️

The spelling was used in order to come further away from the cultural connotations and because it lworked better in the text.

Truthfully, without more context, it's pretty minimal reaction wise. Reading further into this thread, it was more of confusion as to why it's spelled that way by choice. If the character is native, I'd be mildly annoyed by the weird spelling. If he's not, I'd be confused as to why that word was even being used, even spelled that way.

I get the feeling you're looking for some sort of (negative) reaction. Native history is, kind of ironically given they were literally here first, a much less of a touchy subject than that of other non white races in the US. You'd get a lot less kickback if you're appropriating their culture, misrepresenting it, etc than some others. Honestly you could do that and have a very minimal reaction compared to working in the confederate flag for instance.
