I remembered you posted a while ago about quitting smoking. Have you still stopped?

Today is day 1 of my quit attempt (having failed to successfully stop last year despite not having one single puff in over 5 months) and I'm pretty confident because this is something I WANT to do as opposed to feeling like I have to because of health/cost and so on.

I just wondered how you were feeling now and how long it's been. Hearing success stories always spurs me on!

Hows it going so far then Bella? Only one day in I know but still the smallest things can trigger the habit. I just had my friend Kelly over earlier (who has also just quit today) for a catch up and of course we've had some wine and would normally be puffing away. I felt ok but she was kinda pining, as I said it's more habit I think than anything else.

CDL it's just as P said before, mind over matter. I've tried to quit loads but the most successful attempt I had was last year. I had just decided that I actually didn't want to smoke and found it relatively easy compared to all the other attempts. What annoys me is that I never started again through wanting to. I went on holiday got drunk and almost wanted to test myself and say "look it's only one, you can have one and show yourself that you're done with them" but what do you know that one little smoke just triggered that little part of my brain that says "you want to smoke" and once I got home from holiday I found myself smoking at weekends, then during the week again and before I know it I'm back to being a smoker.

I will not be making that mistake again!

Plus smoking interferes with my running and I'm way more passionate about that than I am about smoking.

A person who diets will never lose wieght .. a person who changes their diet, loses wieght.

Same principal applies.

You cannot quit smoking, nobody can quit ... because to doso would require you to say ... "I'm a smoker, trying to quit".

You've just told yourself you are a smoker .. therefore, you are.

I became a non-smoker on the 2nd of February 2009, and because I am a non-smoker, a cigarette will never pass my lips again.

P & CDL - God Job!

Thetis and Bella - I quit 12 days ago no *clapping hands* yes, I see everyday as a milestone (and a few extra bucks in my pocket - let's see that's about $ 60 so far 🙂 ). I also know that any cravings I have now are situational rather than physical. Once you make it past that first week they say it's all in your head. So, I keep that in perspective when I "want" a cigarette; that it is the habit not the addiction that is driving my desire and there is no real "need" for me to have one.

So, for me, given the fact that I've never been one to want something just to have it, by reminding myself that I really don't need it seems to be working well for me. Also, given the fact it has been almost two weeks now since I "became a non-smoker" (thanks P for that perspective) I've noticed how much stronger the stench is on others who do smoke, that in itself is quite the deterrent as well.

People who smoke have no clue how bad they smell ... and I don't mean that as an insult, for I smelled like it for 37 years myself.

But, for real .... it's so bad it cannot even be called an odor ... it is a "stench" like you said.

Great decision you made to become a non-smoker ... all of you who has decided to change your life.

Make a decision to buy something expensive and take the cigarette money and put it away ... reward yourself with the gift to yourself.

"Once you make it past that first week they say it's all in your head"

Actually they say it takes around a week for your lungs to clear themselves out but some 8 weeks for the actual addiction to fade. After that it's just the habitual side you're left with.

In the UK they run "no smoking clinics" where you can sign up and get advice, talk to others and be signed up to a programme of nicotine replacement therapy - patches, gum, champix etc. completely free which is always handy!

In any case it may only be day 2 of being a "non-smoker" but I feel good and haven't craved once. 🙂

Congrats on your decision ladies, I was clean for 13 years and smoked again socially for a year before I realised I was becoming addicted again...Now 5 years on, I wont touch another cigarette, going cold turkey was one of the hardest things I did but I was determined to kick it completely. Nowadays, I find it disgusting around people that smoke...and to think I use to be like them!!

You'll be surprised with the differences...I've noticed smoking made me feel hungova after a big night, real lethargic... and my clothes dont smell the next day!!! You certainly notice that once you've been around someone that does, that your clothes stink from them!!! And it's repulsive!

Worst part is now one of my daughters has picked up the habit and there's not a thing i can say or do to help her realise all I know...

Thetis.
Quitting smoking = more money for you, less for the greedy scamming twat-bastard taxman

Oh, stopping lessens the chance of dying from the related illnesses to.

Go to your local medical centre and get on the NHS stop smoking thingy, for 7 quid-ish, you can get those inhaler things plus fucking shitloads of cartridges (just say you're a 40 a day kinda girl)...Champix is good until it sends people fucking mental, you're spoilt for choice seriously.

I'm not quite as bad as 40 a day lol I've probably only ever smoked 10 a day at my worst and last year I hardly smoked at all stopped for several months had the odd one or two after that. It wasn't until I was paid off from my job at the end of October that I found myself properly starting again. I went to my local no smoking clinic last night and have got patches and gum so that should help. Didn't fancy the champix to be honest as they told me you have to be smoking for a week first while taking the tablets before you quit and I just wanted to get on with it and actually stop.
