The ever-present hypocrisy of the effort and propaganda against Israel knows NO bounds.
In fact, the founder of this academic boycott of Israel (PACBI), whose followers pressured Hawking to forgo the conference in Israel, was "-- himself enrolled as a graduate student in philosophy (ethics) at Tel Aviv University" as recently as 2010.
When questioned by a reporter on this obvious inconsistency with the movement he pioneered, he refused to elaborate, calling it a "personal matter," which he had "no interest" in discussing.

Actually, he buckled under pressure from the BDS movement.
From Hawking's official statement:
—I have received a number of emails from Palestinian academics. They are unanimous that I should respect the boycott. In view of this, I must withdraw from the conference.... "
However, in doing so, he is boycotting the very people who have been working, with much success, on a cure for ALS-- with which Hawking has been suffering for years.
