Would you please elaborate?
Some of these people are so arrogant they think they won't have a hard time without federal dollars, support or unity. They think, oh, well Texas has the oil/gas industry, shipping, manufacturing, prison systems, the beef industry, farming, law enforcement, exports, corporations, educational systems, military bases, food sources, healthcare, etc. and we'll be just fine on our own. They say, after all, our state government is in the black and our unemployment levels are lower than the other states. Yes, Texans are proud and independent, but, there are a lot of things these rebels are forgetting about.
I'm not wanting to argue with anyone about it, I'd just like to hear some intelligent opinions on the matter.
I hope they make it I want to move there.
In theory it could work... but, in reality, for all the things you stated and then some, no. People are truly dense, and they don't actually "think". A number of people in other states are attempting this as well, the feds won't bat an eye if the state legislature is not behind them - we are a Republic after all and the people really do not have a say except through official channels.
In any case, in TX vs. White (1869) the Supreme Court deemed secession as not allowable under the Constitution and can only be accomplished by one of two ways: a revolution or all other states agreeing to it.
That being said, Texans should be very careful about what they wish for - we could just give ya all back to Mexico if ya piss us off LOL

I think its crazy, actually.
As a matter of discussion: what about the debt? Does that get abolished? No, TX still will owe what it owes. That being said, if TX is so well off, why has the debt more than doubled under Perry?
What about currency? That has to be thought through. Go back to a barter system until you get a currency? Silver? Gold?
Will "foreign" companies even want to do business within the new Republic of TX? Will you continue to export agricultural crops or need to keep it at home to support the population. What about imports? (that is if there is not some sort of embargo) How will the state pay for them given the enormous debt load? I'm sure China and maybe even Mexico would still be willing to do business with ya all...
Then you have the issue of the persons who are in poverty - what about single moms? the unemployed? the homeless? the children? the elderly? Federal dollars does go to help support those populations. Or, maybe, TX should just let them all die... who needs those free loaders anyway!
Historically, secession results in things getting MUCH worse before they ever get better (if)...

Oh, and what kind of government would be set up? You have a political system, an economical system and a legal system to consider.
Will it be a republic as I mentioned above (similar to the US) or a true democracy. What about a simple caste system, an autocracy or one which is pluralistic in ideology?
Would TX stick with a free market capitalist economic model or would it lean more toward a participatory model or planned economic model?
Then there is both civil and criminal code to write. Maybe with all those fundies they'll just make it simple and stick with the 10 commandments 😉
I can guarantee that the majority of "the people" behind all these secession petitions have given no thought to any of this... or the consequences secession will present for future generations.
Lildol, you're on a roll! I agree with you! All the social programs would be gone and Medicaid would be saturated. What about people who work for companies with home offices based in another state? Texas might have military bases, but who do the soldiers belong to? The legal system would probably return to the old west ways and there would be hangings on the courthouse square.
Be kinda cool if they could make it, but it sure would be a long hard road.
I've heard Dallas & Houston are now blue states (not sure if this is true) but if it is this means Governor Perry's job could be at risk. The surprising thing about Romney's 47% statement, though, is where the non-income tax filers live. They come from a surprisingly red base. No this won't work and TX won't be able to secede, this is nothing more than Narcissistic rage playing out, temper tantrums galore.
It's just a lot of big ole Texas sized ego and a bunch of blow hards that haven't thought all the details through.
But, if they do go for it, how many people are moving here? And, How many people are moving away? That's a factor, too.
In addition to Texas, idiots in these states have also started petitions: Louisiana, Alaska, Utah, Wyoming, California, Delaware, Nevada, Kansas, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Oklahoma, Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan, New York, Colorado, Oregon, New Jersey, North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina, and Alabama.
I've always considered people to be more like cattle than that of a thinking organism... slime mold has more intelligence!
(btw, ANYONE can start a petition... stupid is as stupid does)

Last I heard, as of this morning, Texas had 65,000 signatures. I'm sure there are more now.
(I am not on that list, by the way)

Which, of course, is still less than 1% of the population. (I'm not in the mood to figure adult pop, I'm sure it is still less than 1% ). No guarantee that people clicking to support the petition are even from TX either....
If they don't like it, the dimwits should just move... all this drama they're creating for naught!

The funny thing though is anyone can sign the petition, people from all parts of the world can sign it, this is all symbolism for I hate Obama. The people that voted for Romney will lose again, like grow up and move on already. Secede from America and just leave, move out of the country. I didn't see anyone asking to secede when Florida stole the election for GWB Jr. What a bunch of cry babies. They'll regret attempting to incite a Civil War, people should remember this and work hard to vote these hateful racist clowns out of office come mid term.

Some of that is state funded and locally funded. Some services are provided by local companies.
Indeed, this is just how the petition reads. However, by the same token, many of those services still come with federal monies attached or federal monies were used to implement and put into place - I believe the author was suggesting, not that the services are 100% funded by the government.

It's about state's rights.
I think the people feel they are being forced to accept the demands of the Federal Government and a lot of people down here don't agree with how the country is going and have different viewpoints than other areas. It's not about Obama. He'll be out in four years, so long term, that's not a big factor. However, there are a lot of decisions that have been made in the last 15 years or so that just don't sit well with a lot of people here.
The people of Texas have always had an independent streak. We are a proud state and yes, as a collective whole, we have a big ego. I think it is because we know we were an independent country before. We were annexed into the US, unlike any of the other states except for Hawaii, if I have my information correct.
But, we are the only state, I believe, that could be self sufficient. We have a large population (26 million??) that would pay taxes to Texas instead of the US. We have resources that a lot of other states don't have. And the Texas people are strong, rustic and resilient.
A Texan is either a Texan by birth or a Texan by choice!
I'm neither for or against it, but if Texas goes, I'll go with her.

The US federal government is illegitimate. It simply serves as a whorehouse for foreign companies, lobbyists while simultaneously impoverishing it's citizens, exporting the wealth and put in a police state.

I think we all know it'll never happen, but it is interesting to imagine it!!!!
I'm from Texas originally and I think this is all bark and no bite. Texans love you to know they were once a nation and they like to play with the idea. I'm actually not against secession tho. Why? Because the interests and aims of the south really are different to the aims and interests of the east coast. And government is becoming big brother, spying on us, patting us down in our private parts at the airport and lying to us repeatedly about what they're doing. I don't blame Texans for wanting to secede. I just don't think it will happen.

I, for one, am in complete favor of deporting ever single damn idiot that signed that petition 🙂 Unlikely as it is. There is a movement in Texas for seccession from the union. It is highly doubted this movement will succeed, but if Texas does secede, could she make it as her own nation?
