64.40,

You need to get a little more into it! I don't want to sound like I am an authority on anything, but I was at one time was a radical opponet against the death penalty! I thought it was cruel and unusual punishment and shouldn't be allowed under any circumstances!!!

After September 11, or maybe because I am a little older my opinions have become slightly more conservative(still a life long Democrat and loyal to the party values!)I have changed. I have also become a memeber of the 'Justice Project' that works against the death penalty, and the reasons why the pendulum has swong back a little is because the law is so screwed up when it comes to capital crimes. I always thought a person had to be convicted beyound a shadow of a doubt....WRONG!!!! In this last year alone, thanks to DNA, there has been over 100 innocent men freed becuase of it! I would rather see 100 guilty men go free then 1 innocent man spent his life in prison because of bad cops, mistaken identity, and out right liars etc...it happens everyday and it could happen to anyone, even you! Unless you have a aliby for every minute of your day, you could be accussed of something you didn't do.

If there is EVIDENCE, and hopefully one day ONLY DNA will be used for death penalty cases and it proves guilty, and if it was hineous not a crime of passion because of mental illness, then I think it is, ok! But we are not there yet and until we are, I have to say NO!

I know of a corrupt forensic scientist who was use as an expert witness in over 8,000 capital cases that she outright lied about to get a job promotion!!! Some of those men were executed. Imagine having that happen to you or a loved one!!! It makes me cry to think of those who have been put in that situation. And don't believe for a second it couldn't happen to you!!!

205, I agree with you about the risk of an innocent person being executed, but I totally DISAGREE with you about letting go of 100 killers in favor of that one person.

I'm sorry, but I believe that even with mistakes, justice in one form or another needs to be served.

I believe too often we're concerned with the well-being and lives of convicted criminals, when we should be sympathizing and empathizing with the victims, who didn't have a say as to how they went in their lives.

Why are we siding with criminals?? I don't particularly care about the life of someone who can coldly take another's life without justification. That also goes for rapists and child molesters.

Anyone who preys oponn the helpless, the elderly, and on our youth doesn't deserve consideration.

That's just my opinion. I'd rather take the chance of one person dying versus having millions of absolute convicts being let go of.

Hold on a second 64, please don't misconstrude what I said! I do believe in the death penalty, provided there is EVIDENCE to support such punishment!!!

You should not be able to convict someone of a CAPITAL CRIME on BS evidence. NO, you don't get to execute someone on expert testimoney or eyewitness testimoney or any other fallible evidence! You have to have proof beyond a resonable doubt. I hope to hell you don't look like someone who commits a crime and you find yourself on the inside of a prison cell on DEATH ROW!!! Do you understand what I am saying now—?

I am with you a hundred percent on people who kill and abuse animals. Did you happen to see the news recently about the Iranians gasing those dogs! I couldn't even watch it!!!!

In my heart, there will be a place for those people when all is done!!!

Wow, controversial thread!

I take a rather hardline approach to this subject, like 64. I am also a loyal, registered democrat, but fully support the death penalty. I also don't think there is any justification or excuse for putting innocent men or women on death row, and I do believe the system needs improvement. Lots of improvement. But I can't honestly say that I don't support the death penalty for those who are truly guilty.

I, too, subscribe to the "an eye for an eye" school of thought.

Hey S!

Well first, sorry about the extremely delayed response, I got caught up in a bunch of other threads and kept forgetting to reply to this one to address what you said.

I just wanted to thank you for your compliments about my values! And also, my parents would be thrilled to death to hear that someone thinks they did a good job instilling them in me...that was very nice of you to say!

And hey, I may have been switched at birth...you never know! (LOL) Would have been honored to have had you as a mother. : )
