From Deborah Colcutt in Frankfurt,
Thursday, November 6, 1997

"How one of the world?s richest playboys has proved that our lives and loves are decided by the stars."

Marriage and divorce, death and crime ? it really is all in the stars. Horoscope readers have believed it for years, but now there is scientific proof. And the unlikely source is the ageing European playboy Gunther Sachs.

The multi-millionaire, who was once married to Brigitte Bardot, is the author ot a new book which concludes that star signs play a significant part in shaping our lives.

Sachs, a Swiss citizen married to Swedish former model Mirja, set out to test the assumptions of astrologists by gathering a team of scientists and statisticians which, over two years, analysed the lives of nearly one million men and women.

"Do Pisceans commit more traffic offences than Geminis?" he asked. "Can a man whose sign is Scorpio be happily married to a Cancer woman? Are you more or less likely to get cancer it you are a Pisces or a Capricorn?"

The answers to these, and thousands of other questions, have led Sachs to the inescapable conclusion that there is a definite link between star signs and human behaviour. Everything from our choice of marriage partner and the likelihood of divorce, to our career and cause of death is pre-determined.

"In every case, there were significant results, way beyond what is explicable through mere coincidence."

The idea for the book, The Astrology File, just published in Germany, came to Sachs on a New Year's night, gazing at the star above his home in the Swiss mountains.

"It was difficult at first. I wasn't taken seriously by some academics," said Sachs, who at one time studied mathematics and economics. But by setting up the grandly titled Institute for the Empirical and Mathematical Examination of the Possible Truth of Astrology in Relation to Human Behaviour, and using established statistical techniques, Sachs has won over even the cynics.?

With help from the official statistics office in Switzerland, where authorities have recorded the hour of birth of every citizen since 1875, his team gathered statistics on every facet of life.

Sachs laid down rigid rules tor his study. The team was not to start with any assumptions: the study must be based exclusively on empirical data; astrologists were not to be consulted; and the results were to be independently controlled.

And after the data was compiled, he brought in

MARRIAGE
Armed with the details of every Swiss married couple from 1987 to 1994 ? 717,526 men and women ? Sachs concludes there is a clear pattern of people of a particular star sign commonly marrying somebody of another particular sign. He says the likelihood of it happening accidentally is a remote one?in?50,000 chance.

By sorting the men into their 12 star signs, along with the women and their signs, Sachs and his researchers studied all the 144 possible marriage permutations.

They found the same 25 combinations appeared time and again.

For partners with the same signs, the most frequent combinations were Capricorns, Geminis and Aquarians. Less frequent were Sagittarian couples. Least frequent of all were cases of Taurean or Libran couples marrying.

In marriages involving couples born under different star signs, the three most consistently star?struck couples were; Capricorn male and Pisces female, Pisces male und Scorpio woman and Gemini man and Taurus woman.

That fits the bili for long?term couples such as the Queen (Taurus) and Prince Philip (Gemini).

Far rarer combinations were; Libra male with Aries woman, Aries man and Leo woman and Gemini man and Capricorn woman.

DIVORCE
Sachs looked at the 109,030 divorces in the same 1987-1994 period.

He found that 9.1 pc of all divorced men were Arians, and 8.5 pc of all divorced women were Leos. On further investigation, they found that a higher proportion of marriages combining Aries men and Leo women ended in divorce than with any other star signs.

Using tbe same 144 permutations studied for marriage, Sachs found 23 divorce combinations came up particularly frequently, with the likelihood of it being a coincidence rated at one in 26.

The following marriage combinations were significantly more likely to end in divorce than others: Aries husband and wife; Gemini husband and Taurus wife; Taurus male and Cancer female; Pisces male and Scorpio female.

The most likely males to divorce are Librans and Geminis. The most likely women to suffer a broken marriage are Geminis and Capricorns.

That could spell bad news for Johnny Depp (Gemini) and Kate Moss (Capricorn).

CRIME
The team studied data on 325,866 men and women convicted of a crime between 1986 and 1994 in Switzerland.

The research showed significant links between star signs and criminal convictions.

The most significant results to emerge from the study were that Geminis and Scorpions stole less than any other star sign; that Capricorns are more likely to be convicted for drug dealing; Sagittarians more often steal cars; and Taureans are most often convicted of embezzlement.

DEATH
Sachs admits that he had reservattions about establishing a link between star signs and fatal illness, fearful of the reaction it might provoke in readers.

But his curiosity got the better of him and he turned to 600,000 death certificates gathered by the Swiss authorities between 1969 and 1994.

The team was careful to study only cases where illness or accident were the direct causes ot death, as opposed to old age or where death was caused by a number of contributory factors.

They looked at 20 causes of death, including Aids, alcoholism, diabetes, flu, cancer, heart attacks, strokes and tuberculosis, and disvovered strong links between star signs and cause of death.

The statistics show that a high number of Arians died of a heart attack, Librans seemed more likely to contract lung cancer, and more Leos died of brain diseases.

Few Pisceans died from urinary diseases, a small number of Aquarians died of lung disease and, ironically, very few Cancerian women died of breast cancer.

Capricorns are more likely to be convicted for drug dealing

^this makes alot of sense actually- drug dealers are usually excellent businessmen

or business WOMEN +_+

the best and most wealthy drug dealers can

handle large accounts with many clients, never underestimate the worth of their product OR succumb to it, have great connections with important people and make worthy investments!

Schoene this is very good to read.

Lol Who does this kind of work though? You're right - headache work is exactly what it is.

Anyway,

Missmorals, Tia made Scorpio Female/Pisces Male work - and I can picture it, because I'm pretty close to a good Scorp-Fish couple, and I think the fact that a Pisces male knows how to keep a Scorp female feeling safe plays a big part in it, at least that's what I've picked up. Sure, they have fights, but these two seem to be able to reconcile their differences relatively easily. These two are very good friends.

"The most significant results to emerge from the study were that Geminis and Scorpions stole less than any other star sign."

Hmmmmm,

So does that mean that they're the signs that are caught the least? I don't think that would be as surprising....

sort of....there have been plenty of times from my own experience that i have actually seen it happen in front of my eyes...but its interesting to get an unbiased study and to read its results...

i think alot of people who are unaware of its deeper complexities write it (astrology) off as bullshit....that's understandable, pop astrology doesn't go into detail about planets and charts, which usually hit the nail on the head....but when i think about its history, it was the religion of the ancient Romans, Egytians and i think the Sumerians.......and i think (i could be wrong) Babylonians....so there has to be something to it....
