How do I show how talented I am?

I don't even think that's the right question to ask. What it comes down to is it relates to that question someone posted here in the Scorpio forum about dealing a bad boss, it got me thinking about my own situation. I come from a small organization but very fast paced and its a very powerful company. There is alot of demand for our services and alot of us are fairly known in the local community.

Problem is as talented as I am (and I'm not just saying that), I'm the veteran in the group and the one people go to when they need someone to be trained whether it is managers or regular employees but at the same time I feel like what I'm "known" for isn't really what I've ever wanted to be known for. Department heads/middle management/upper management (Execs) go to me for:

- Training other people
- When they can't figure out something operationally/data wise
- If they can't find something in their archives
- System/processes improvements

and if they don't need help with the above then they don't seek me out at all. But I never wanted to be known for "operations" if any of you know that that entails.

What we do is help make a difference in the community and that's what I love doing but becuase I think that's my "weakness" when I don't think it is, they usually don't involve me in those issues but those issues are at the meat of what we do and I find them telling other employees about those projects, stories etc. when those employees are sucky employees.

How can I get myself:

- Not to be typecasted
- More sought out
- To be seen as skilled in those more important areas when they see it as a weakness when it isn't a weakness

I have made half an attempt so far and its worked for a tiny bit but I think its failed because:

1. I'm not an overly talkative or charismatic individual. I can have conversations but I'm just not charismatic like you see politicans are and our company thrives on having those kinds of individuals
2. I'm so work focused and productive to the point where maybe I'm too productive
3. Scorpios are naturally mysterious so I don't always talk about myself and things I do alot

Any help, becuase I'm honestly just an easy going, focused, hard working,efficient/productive individual and I think that's what is making it worse for me.

Any solid tips?

Just do whatever you do, quietly. Don't look for accolades and awards and recognition. You'll only be disappointed
when none comes. - The true rewards are when true appreciation, comes from out of nowhere and unexpectedly.
Not when you demand it.

I'm not necessarily looking for recognition. It's more like I find myself bored all the time. Anyone will tell you my specific department would fall apart if I wasn't there, but that's becuase I'm productive/efficient.

But I'm bored all the time because I'm not usually included in the core projects because I think management thinks I'm not skilled enough, when if I was included more I'd be more skilled. Makes sense right?

I thought I've done everything I could to make it known where my interests lie with creating solutions related to those specific project areas, I try to start conversations about those projects and etc. but it has me feeling bored semi left out and not motivated becuase what I'd love to do is the area they don't think I'm skilled with.

So there has to be a better way for me to make them realize I want to learn/be involved.

How can I promote things that they aren't really necessarily important.

They seek me out for operational feedback how to improve processes and systems which is important but its not something they are too interested in either. Its something that just has to be done.

So what am I going to say, talk about stuff I helped em with that isn't too interesting to them anyway?

Maybe, you need to find a different line of work. sounds like you are not being fulfilled.

The only way to promote that which is unimportant is a) exaggerate b) find out exactly what makes that insignificant thing truly important and promote that. - IF you can go with b then you shouldn't have to exaggerate.
You can't promote junk when it IS junk.

Well operations/systems/processes are important, its what make companies sustainable. It wasn't what I was hired for. I'm great at alot of things because I learn quickly and I know how to think outside the box.

But when I was hired the department I was in lacked processes so because I was one of the key people in the department at the time I along with others who worked here or still work here at the time all fixed the structure and know we're doing well...but I'm the one person who's lasted here the longest that was a part of all that.

So without even trying to be, I got typecasted alot in conversations as the go to person who can fix similar problems. But its things that people don't care about, they aren't fascinated by it, they don't want to hear baout it, but th ey know its important to fix and get done. So I have a reputation for fixing things people don't wanna deal with themselves. That's not what I ever wanted to be known for.

I wanted to help those we service, that's why I took the job in the first place but because I was so good at fixing things and keeping things functional, they probably don't want to take me away from that cause they are afraid of it falling apart. But its not what i was hired for. I want to be involved in the core projects that I know will fulfill me but I guess those are areas they think I'm weaker in and plus they don't want to take me away from operational type of work because they probably are afraid of what will happen if they do.

I love what I do but I shouldn't have to repeat myself multiple times when I tell them what my ideal situation is, or having to reinvent projects/solutions to show them that I am skilled in other areas.

I have even trained other poeple in the operational stuff and they could and have handled it just fine but they always keep asking me what my opinion is on it when theys hould be talking to their staff that have been trained by me that are doing great.

Even when I try and talk to them about other things/projects, they don't wanna know my opinion on those and its frustrating when I know i'm right with the other projects too.

How can u bring the other areas up with them. If u can find away to do it bring it up. Makes u look versatile.
"Oh such n such date I did this"u have to be ur own promoter, n believe it, be ur own cheerleader , don't hide ur power show it.

I've done that but I'm telling you they tend to not listen or they listen and that's it they don't respond and switch it back to the same shit they wave me to focus on.

I want to be challenged and be allowed to work directly with clients because I shouldn't have to beg.

I work for govt/politics. More like public admin.

We build programs or resources in partnership with other city agencies to solve community problems like : unemployment, economy, etc.

Our clients are either city agencies that need our help or regular ppl in the community that want access to the program or resources we create.

My job description is basically like a coordinator ? It's a vague title. But it's supposed to be the person pulling various components together and building programs. I also am the person that takes community requests meets with them and provides a solution by refering them to the appropriate resource.

Somehow I get asked by my boss or upper mgmt to pull data reports from our database, trouble shoot data, check files, pull and put away files for other ppl, contact clients for other ppl. Somehow I became the person who handles the grunt work like I'm their little bItch cause no one elSe wants to do it and cause I do it so well

So my boss or he asks other ppl who are sucky to do the stuff that's on my job description or work with clients directly but I'm better at it.

I don't even get told how clients are progressing.

Don't take this personally, but I sometimes think that about 95% of government jobs are NOT really necessary. Rather,
what jobs there are, are merely "artificial" to support the role of giving the appearance that "government
works for.... YOU!"
Because of all those "jobs" in government, the government turns out to be a useless sluggish beast so fat, it's got it's own built-in waterbed. I am not saying your job isn't necessary, but on the contrary, it's the programs that
create jobs that are not necessary. Your job experience that you're sharing here, only proves my point.
You're assigned to do a certain task, your superior takes the load off your plate and gives them to people who
are not as qualified for that task as you are. - The adage "how many monkeys does it take?" applies here.
Leave it to government to find out and let you know.
Your tax dollars at work.

yeee hawww

@humble never hated my skillset. I just think it was a mistake being too good at shit that never mattered to them but even then I thought it was only temporary and that is eventually work on what mattered.

@LetitB I always find a tiny bit to get involved with specific client cases but it's not often and it's not enough to be fulfilled and even then I was told a few months ago to focus on what I'm told which was unexpected as 99% of the time I keep steady with what's expected of me so I'm not sure where that came from.

Then concentrate on what is enough for you that will complete you, look for it elsewhere and stop being a dictated expectation would be my advice.

Funny thing is I'm such a hard worker. Always do what I'm told, thought that was enough and the one person that theyre so dependent on

But some how I'm always the one getting repremanded or corrected. Usually told that I need to. "Speak up more", or why I'm so quiet, that I need to stop talking so much, why I don't like helping ppl etc

Things that contradict each other and yet a lot of employees take 2 hour lunches , slack off all the time

Yet all I ask is to be more included in client cases and somehow I'm the bad guy for wanting to work harder

I get what your saying though

Move on from being unfulfilled? Fuck that. I'm not going to accept as is.

it's not even easy as quitting. Even though I've wanted to for a good while now.

I even told my sister (libra) because she wants to leave her job for a similar reason

She said my situation was different and I shouldn't quit because I'm lucky I get paid a hell of a lot for work that comes easy to me.

I'll tell you what I told her that those aspects aren't enough for me. Anyone that is or knows scorpios well can understand why emotional and passion fulfillment is everything to us

That is true @ twirl. They only owe me a paycheck.

But anyone who owned a SUCCESSFUL company knows that growth is partially dictated by the power and motivation of their employees. Leaders know this, managers do not.

By the way, there was this opportunity that opened up a year ago in my old department whose main role was solely to do what typecasted as. More pay, non managerial.

Despite meaning clear many times I do not like what I'm typecasted as they assumed id apply for the position and when 5 outside people happily applied for the position and realized I didn't they closed the position when they really should have hired someone.

But during the recruitment process upper mgmt asked why I didn't apply and I reminded them that's never been what I wanted to be involved with.

At the same time my boss was kind panicked and thought I'd apply and leave and then when he asked why I didn't apply it's more money. I reminded him again that what I have always wNted was to be involved with client projects. And he's like. "Oh"

Lol so what exuse do they have now

You don't have to quit. You keep this job while looking for the one you dream about. Sometimes it's nicer to be paid less for what you love doing, but if that isn't an option you keep looking until you find it.

Or..continue being miserable and complaining about it. Who knows? If they see you found another job, the current company might just offer you what you want. You never know until you...TRY.

I wasn't calling myself a leader, I was referencing great leaders. Check out "Eric Thomas". He probably is a scorpio, nevermind he's a Virgo.

Anyway, his ideals are what I agree with. Success = fueling passion with determination and drive.

I just don't get how these managers that work here don't utilize someone (Aka me) more than they do. I mean they constantly complain about how nothing progresses and all this other bullshit but when people ask for more they don't give it to them.

Psh. If the unemployment wasnt so high and uncertain, I'd have given up already.

If I left I am 100% certain my manager would have a heart attack. He thought I was quitting one day, when I was talking about soemthing entirely and he looked like he was having one and when I reassured him what I was talking about that he misunderstood he was happy again.

So I know what the reaction would be but I shouldn't have to quit, just for them to "get it" when I tell them the first time they should do something about it or at least consider it. Who lets their employees go around unhappy, they whine about how the employees have low morale.

THIS IS WHY!

I'm not suggesting you just quit. I suggested you LOOK for what you want while keeping this job and find it. They clearly don't "get it" is my point. Unless I've read this entire thread wrong.

how am I being a martyr.

By def it means "a person who pretends to suffer or who exaggerates suffering in order to get praise or sympathy"

I'm not pretending to suffer. The managers in here constantly talk about how the company and/or department isn't growing, or someone doesn't do nothing, or some other manager doesn't do their job, or how the employees have low morale. It's constant convesrations.

But they don't even realize how many times people are wanting to do more and please their managers and they IGNORE it. If they're going to ignore employees then they shouldn't wonder why their departments are chaotic.

But in reference to my situation, when does any boss ever have someone who wants to take on a bigger work load? Answer me that!

@LetitB They don't get it becuase they wouldn't be so overwhelmed with keeping their individual departments going if they would learn to delegate and stop taking things on by themselves. I'm not saying its what every department should do but in mine, I'm more than capable of stepping up. I'm practically one of the few employees in the company that doesn't have to be micro managed. So that at least speaks for itself.

But yep I should start literally looking, I hope I find one that actually pays as much as I do. It's not that I prefer the same pay, I have to bills/debt wise.

Yup I guess I have to stop caring or "change the world" and probably should tell other ppl in the company who contradict themselves to shit or get off the pot.

But I think I'll slowly do what I love and get what I want over time. My boss no one who is known as the gOlden boy manager cause he does whatever ppl tell him to do even if he hates it (and whines when no one is around) and bends over backwards (and again whines). But he's always been talented but a couple of years ago upper mgmt thought he sucked but what I admire that he took advantage of every opportunity to help everyone ... Be nice to everyone even he hated em

Basically he kissed ass all around and was careful when he whined. So now they see him as an assest when they didn't before.

I think at running the risk maybe I should do the same

You need to get past the idea that you "shouldn't have to ..." do something more.

Most of your complaints (and threads, for that matter) center around this entitlement complex.

You seem to think that although life is unfair for most people...

... it should be FAIR when dealing with you.

If you want change, you're going to have to do something besides waiting for others to see the light just

because you instructed them to do so, or because they "should."

You've been given excellent advice from numerous people, the crux of which is to take matters into your own hands.

Re-read this and this .

Exactly-- self pity doesn't work.

It's a useless and dangerous thing to get mired in-- and those already stuck always seem to

want to pull others in to commiserate (and steal their energy).

Ahhhh Ok I read up to page 3 and Mystical as a fellow Scorp that in a different place dealt with the same things you do, I am telling you that if you want to be in that position...... you're probably going to have to go somewhere else. Anywhere else. It can most definitely be a better place than where you're at now.

You have showed yourself that you can become really good at a job if given the time and the opportunity. You have dedication and you have will. It doesn't matter that the others might take 2 hour breaks, or not be as efficient as you. There is a possibility that they are keeping you where you're at for personal reasons and its ugly, I know, but unless you can take a very aggressive stance and name reasons why they will not be alright without you taking the position you want, then they aren't going to pay you much more mind than they already are.

I left the place that wasn't appreciating me for my skill set because it became OBVIOUS that they did not want me taking a leadership position. I am much younger than most managers and to have people referring to me as the manager, bothered the managers in position simply because they enjoyed slacking a little and I do not. The easy going people and the people will egotistical issues that are trying to keep you where you're at without giving your potential a chance are the ones that are worried that you will do better than them. As a Scorpio, do this for yourself: Don't block the power that you have. Your choices are to either appreciate the boring job that you've become exceptionally good at, to make moving a challenge and get your asss up there, or to leave and start your own thing up doing something that is.... less corrupt than politics.

Tell me you have some other interests where you can put your great, reliable, and savvy skill set. Look at it in the big picture because this might be the best option for you. Working under a management that stifles you is not a fun feeling. It is a sign that you are better than what you're working for.

Leaders would argue against that statement to the death!

If you feel like you are a leader trapped in a servants job....you need to change that job to one where you are a leader...that is all there is to it...and you know Scorpios never die anyways....we leave stingers everywhere that create our offspring and eventually we will rule the world.

Really?? Rule the world lol ~ i take it that is a joke, if it isn't, then that is a very worrying attitude to take
especially as everyone knows it is ARIES that will ultimately rule the world

Aries— REALLY?? too hot tempered and irrational to rule, get under their skin and see how fast they will destroy everything even their bridges. (ex-girlfriend and younger sister in Aries) I see the world turn into the surface of the sun if they were to rule the world. No offense to any Aries, just being objective.

I've been contemplating for a long time about leaving just at least for my sanity or at least for a place that shares the same work ethic as I do. Our company to clients has a great reputation but to partnerships or similar organizations the company has a bad rap. Even when people found out I got hired for the company they were like "ohhhhhhhhhhh nooooo don't work there". The rap is due from having the top leaders we have and the choices they seem to make.

The way the environment hasn't changed and there's a small % of people in the company who notice the dysfunction in the environment but no one expects it to change. The rest of the people in the company ARE the dysfunction or make the dysfunction worse and I don't think it'll change ever unless you change the top leaders.

I don't think they undervalue my work becuase they WANT me in this position forever, I think they just don't want any complication of having to train someone. I don't think anyone here has been "trained" unless I did it. I never got trained lol.

I'm not sure why people are accepting as is becuase everyone has found a way to adapt to the crap or at least tolerate it when in fact potential of fixing the crap will make things so much easier but its all political like you said.

Most people just adapt to the crap and keep going until they feel like quitting. I think the only rational I have is to not let myself get back into old habits and just BE the example for people to follow and maybe my influence will happen that way.

People are a product of their environments after all.
