ok, well for starters, do you like it? if so, what is/are your favorite thing(s) about it? if not, why not? in general, what do you like and dislike? on a scale of 1-10, how safe would you say it is? compare it to another international city if you can. is it expensive to live there? again, comparisons are appreciated. 😛
erm. well, i've been asked to move there. and, seeing how my future recently got COMPLETELY fucked up, i am actually considering it. to be honest with you i'm a little sick of america. i know that ppl always say to stick it out when things get tough, because it shows you're "reliable" or "mature" or something, but i'd rather just LEAVE the bitch.
so, at this point it's really just an idea i'm toying with. but i would really appreciate anything you can tell me. it would give me more things to mull over.
Ok that really helps a little - I could have ratted off some generic responses but your response will help us get more personalised...right then, let's make a lil chart from your questions...please let me know if I lose you at any point. Playing cat and mouse with my boss so a bit distacted atm...
''do you like it? if so, what is/are your favorite thing(s) about it?''
Yes very much as I am very much a city soul. I like to be able to get anything I want while retaining a certain aspect of anonymity. I know my neighbours vaguely but not personally - they have my back and vice versa 50% of the time - you know how it is. It is very similar to NY in terms of population density, transportation, cost of living, nightlife, multiculturalism and goes on from there.
Some differences with NY & US...
Unlike NY, it retained a lot of the cultural aspect i.e. red buses, palace, cathedral, the odd carriage here and there, no malls, black cabs, driving style , etc. Hence sometimes you feel like you stepped into a scene from Mary Poppins...
Weapons are illegal so it's an added bonus that you won't ever feel unsafe even with the police. Only the terrorism police are allowed weapons in public. This is one thing I notice in the US, when talking to the police or even mall guards, I'm kinda nervous around the weapons.
Transportation is accessible from all corners - you really never need a car. If you drive, it's fun - unlike NY where it's crammed roads...it's tiny roads with no parking, dramatic maneuvers, stick-shift cars - I'm a lil daredevil so love it. Also, police is not crawling around the roads like I notice when driving in the US - so much live police on the roads !...they use stationary cameras a lot so you know to behave...
Shopping's a major plus for me here - it's very updated regularly...and affordable. Competition's stiff...
Authorities are friendly and approachable with a sense of humour. This is what I didn't appreciate in the US, the authorities have no sense of humour and they like to Lord it over you any chance they have.
Multiculturalism - well only you can hold yourself back - they're are so many races / mixed or otherwise, you'll identify somewhere somewhat 🙂
Public - they are not opening friendly - like the rest of the US not necessarily NY...I'm shocked everytime I'm in the south parts of US, everyone's saying hello like they know you 🙂
''if not, why not? in general, what do you like and dislike?''
Things that make it not so great:
Cost of living - with the European Union, tangible and non-tangible goods have become cheaper. However, the housing costs seems to chip into so much...with the tax...this is comparable to NY. There's overpopulation so the houses are in demand so greatly inflated prices. With the recent world energy problems, utility has sky-rocketed...
Overpopulation causes other problems also as the general public services are in high demand, trains and buses are crammed during rush hour, etc...as expected with loads of cities.
Multiculturalism - a lot of different cultures trying to live together peacefully - it works but there will be good and bad being imported...like the gangsta/gang culture, illegal trades ...it's cool especially with the younger crowd who are desperate to identify as a separate culture instead of attempting to integrate - since weapons are illegal, they find a way to get it so this is on the rise and contributes to the safety aspect...again, depends on where you go hang out...if you hang out in the wrong places, yea, expect to be very very scared! If not, quite safe.
Not really knowing or trusting your neighbours if this bothers you 🙂
Job opportunities - very very competitive in part due to high population density and London is a service industry with most of the other types of jobs pushed out to other countries or cities...so be ready find a way to keep your head above water...
Driving is just really a way to burn cash - it's a small place so no parking, petrol's very expensive - now 1.10 pounds minimum per liter unleaded...equals ~ $ 7.50 per gallon. However, the cars have better efficiency but still...
Public Transportation is not cheap either - check out 'transport for London' for more info.
I think it's all very very similar to NY but most of the negatives can be countered by moving to the subs of London - much cheaper...then commute into London...not cool enough for some I guess.
I think the cost of living and other aspects are comparable to NY...so you have a pretty good advantage.
It's good to try different places I think if you have the opportunity, it opens you up to so much more - if it doesn't work out, you have a place to go back to...You always want to wonder what if?
I've been in a similar position and I grabbed the ram by its horns - in china atm...
wow! i read every word of those posts, but am not sure what to say except thank you so much for the info. i was lucky you actually saw this thread, considering nobody ever comes to this forum.
you make london sound pretty sweet. and it's awesome you're in china. never wanted to go there and still don't, but cool when other people do nonetheless.
Extreme Japan You scored 70% culture, 53% social, 54% activity, and 55% adventure! You want it all. The great thing is, in the Land of the Rising Sun, you can HAVE it all. Japan has a rich culture that goes back thousands of years. But did you k
Any suggestions on good places to travel throughout the world? I was thinking about traveling some places within the next year but I wondered if anyone had some experiences. I don't travel much I've only been outside of the U.S. once. I think I just need
i think the biggest change since last time I was home is that I won't look twice when someone opens a bottle of vodka up in front of me and offers me some...i might even take it.

I think I'm going to runaway and walk the earth... I wanted to get sponsered, but my friend says it's part of the rules of walking the earth that you don't get any money... I think she got it out of a hippy book or something, but I'm like "this is the 21s
