Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 ? March 19, 1950) was an American author, best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan, although he produced works in many genres. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Rice_Burroughs]
I discovered ERB as a pre-teen, and his vivid narratives fueled my fascination with the Red Planet. Yes, I knew his Barsoom was nothing like the real Mars, but his stories were so much fun that I suspended my logic and enjoyed John Carter's adventures...

I'm not sure when I realized ERB was a Virgo, but after years of reading his stories, it's easy to see how truly Virgo they are -- especially in the way romantic love comes to the heroes...

Whether the setting is Mars, or Venus, or The Lost Continent, or at The Earth's Core, the Hero is always a strong, brave, honorable man, who always insults / confuses his future true love at their first meeting; then, the Hero spends the rest of the book trying to convince the woman that he was totally ignorant of her alien customs, and that he meant no offense. After defending her several times, and going through great hardships, he is able to win her love...

The Woman is always beautiful, smart, virtuous, and thoroughly independent -- quite able to stand on her own without a man's help. Yet... she sees the good in the Hero, and lets him capture her heart...

Yeah, I know, pure pulp fiction! But, it really hooks us VirGuys... probably because a VirGuy wrote this shit!

Here's what ERB had to say about that: "...if people were paid for writing rot such as I read in some of those magazines that I could write stories just as rotten. As a matter of fact, although I had never written a story, I knew absolutely that I could write stories just as entertaining and probably a whole lot more so than any I chanced to read in those magazines."

A Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous Barsoom series. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. He wrote it between July and September 28, 1911, going through four working titles; initially, he was going to call it My First Adventure on Mars, then The Green Martians, Dejah Thoris, Martian Princess, and finally Under the Moons of Mars. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Princess_of_Mars]
This was my first ERB book, and I've read it dozens of times over the last 30+ years...

Here's a typical ERB passage on courtship that fairly screams I AM A VIRGO MALE...

Not once did I have speech with Dejah Thoris, as she sent no word to me that I would be welcome at her chariot, and my foolish pride kept me from making any advances. I verily believe that a man's way with women is in inverse ratio to his prowess among men. The weakling and the saphead have often great ability to charm the fair sex, while the fighting man who can face a thousand real dangers unafraid, sits hiding in the shadows like some frightened child.

The Hero of ERB's Barsoom Series is Captain John Carter of Virginia, a Civil War veteran who's faced death hundreds of times, and endured many hardships on an alien world. ERB himself had a tough go of it, and failed at just about every occupation he tried before he became an author. What stands out to me is that Virgos are often more rugged than they appear, and are often brave without bravado. We'll fight & win, but we won't spend the rest of our lives bragging to anyone & everyone about our victories. I'm a decorated Desert Storm veteran, but unlike many of my peers, I don't sit around the bar and tell my "war stories" over & over & over again...

And yet... these brave and resourceful men are scared to death of... Love!
