I’d say it’s a bit different in a relationship context, I’m actually interested in what they’re saying. Otherwise....I’m out. Or trying to make a joke.

oh yes, we're good listeners cause that's where we get all our information even if it's embellished a little - we do need to be upfront about our needs however. I'm much better at that now that I'm older

Well its not meant to be enjoyed smalltalk its feeling people out in a ritualized way.

It can be interesting if you care about observing and testing the person reactions rather than sharing meaningful content.

OP - probably better if you do most of the talking. Mention any interesting facts you know, movies you’ve seen, etc.

Hmm yes I have found it pointless trying to ask about him as even though I hear from others sometimes that things are stressful, he would never divulge that to me, so convo can be very one sided. I was never sure if that’s just his way or he’s not interested in talking.

I’m an actor so I always have something different to share depending on what job I’m doing.

I actually prefer having deeper conversations but if I’m tired I just want something short so I can hear his voice really because he never initiates deep convo I have to and sometimes after a long day my brain is switched off

He probably thinks it is unimportant to talk about his day. As time goes on he may open up to you about personal matters.

This. If he is anything like my partner, give him a bit of time. I spent the first 6 months of our relationship frustrated from the lack of depth in our conversations. It might just take a bit of time for him to get used to you.
