Actually neither of that - I would attribute it to his Moon-Jupiter conjunction in 3rd house in Pisces + likely substance abuse (absinthe or stuff like that likely, whatever was popular at a time). Pisces rules visionary insights-Jupiter conjunct Moon in it expands the visionary in a person...based on the available charts at least
