I love you is an action.
I am in love with you is a state of being.
Wow why can't I be more concise :/

I've never told anyone "I am in love with you". I have loved and have said I love you to my significant other but like you I can love alot of people and animals. Have you ever said, I'm in love with you?
Yes, I have said it to one person. He made me feel so comfortable with everything and let me be myself with no judgments. That situation is still weird to me, how it all went down and it's done now (at least for me). And to be so in love with someone and then to know that I will and can never be like that with them, no matter what happens in the future.
What are you thinking about? Are you contemplating this because of something that's going on with or around you?click to expand

I love you = I choose to love you - I love you for a reason - I love my car because it's economical, I love my shoes because they are comfortable, I love you because you have been faithful and shown love to me and are loyal to me.
I am in love with you = Equals the true feeling of love - the elation of love. The feeling that can be fleeting but in a true loving relationship always returns.
Which is better well I dunno.... you are talking about semantics here after all. I would say to tell someone that you love them..
a) Represents serious feelings. Ones that you don't always feel and that make you feel needed and wanted.
b) But it also represents the choice to love someone even when those feelings aren't present. Because they will never always be. But true love will always have those feelings return no matter what. At the end of the day, we all think of love in a very selfish way. Love is something you do without expecting something necessarily in return.click to expand
