Escapism or Facts?

What currently interests you in a book? Are you looking for pure escapism or facts? I tend toward classics for fiction (no contemporary writer holds my interest). However, any historical subject is endlessly fascinating to me as the truth tends to be stranger than fiction. What makes you want to read?

That is an extremely hard question for me. My tastes run the gamut from extremely old books to Nora Roberts or Christine Feehan. I enjoy history if it's not dry as mummy dust. I only have one hard and fast rule with a book. If I am not completely absorbed and in another realm ( wherever that may be; deep in a Louisiana bayou, strolling the moors, ancient Egypt, across the rift, 1500's England, etc. ) by page one, I set it aside.

If the topic interests me, I'm often moved to buy a book. Or borrow it from the local library.

I enjoy books on history, global affairs, astrology. But over the years, I've grown more selective as a reader. One must separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

Read THE LAST LION BY WILLIAM MANCHESTER its about Churchhill in the wilderness years early 30,s up to WWII a great read.

I'll second that. 'The Last Lion' is superbly written and I've read quite a few biographies. My brother sent me this book as he's fascinated by Churchill and wanted me to read about him. I thought I knew enough about Churchill because of WW2 but his life before is just as fascinating if not more. I'm still reading it but for anyone looking for a good bio, check this out.

I found "Tuesdays with Morrie" a guide to dieing a great read as for "The Last Lion" the best Bio I ever read infact I will read it again to catch more of the man. I wish manchester had writen a book on "Leonardo Da Vinci" he was in my opin the greatest man who ever lived

I have read a lot about Henry the VIII but not that book. lets see 6 wifes 3 childern If I ever get a chance I plan to dig deeper into the TUDORS they were Walsh you know.

I read mostly non-fiction.

I steer towards philosophy, metaphysics, theology/spiritual teachings, social & cultural analysis, art history, holistic health. Yeah !

My favorite book is actually a graphic novel memoir by Marjane Satrapi titled, Perspolis. They made a movie rendition of it. I was on a Haruki Murakami roll for a couple years, but his plots became too formulaic for my taste. However, his story telling is impeccable. His books are like hooks.

another great read P.D. James Mysterys

P.D. James is one of my faves. I prefer history and biographies mostly.
However, I received 'The Book of Disquiet' by Fernando Pessoa and found it quite profound.
It's a gem, check it out.
