Cancer folks do have a strong sense of fair play.
More than they're given credit for.
He obviously felt that what was being said was not right.
I'm surprised he's not taking a second look at his girlfriend--if she is talking that way about her (now ex) friend, the thoughts are probably running through his head about what she's saying about him while he isn't around.
He is taking a step back from the relationship as well. It makes him weary about this person's character and I get where he is coming from.
Maybe disloyal to their bond but they just started dating.
