Is it true that:
1. If you have to ask the question "Should I leave my Cancer alone?" the answer is YES and BACK OFF!
2. If you don't have a thick skin, this is not the sign for you. Cancers have an uncanny ability to care about you to no end, look after you, comfort you and coddle you...they also have the ability to execute a zinger that will knock the breath out of you. I find it quite amazing actually. Endlessly loving, but can take you down a notch effortlessly.
3. If you can't tell whether your Cancer is serious or joking, ask them. Seriously. Don't walk away wondering if the last thing they said was supposed to hurt as much as it did. I will say now though that 99% of the time they make an off colour remark about something you've said or done, they are just teasing you!
4. If they do mean the horrible things they said to you, they will either be endlessly apologetic, or tell you to suck it up and get over it. This has happened with every Cancer I know. Maybe this is where my thick skin came from...who knows
5. As much as they like to pretend they don't care, they really, really do. They will sit on it. They won't speak about it. When they see you, the look in their eyes will make it obvious. Don't prod. It will come out eventually.
5. That tough outward persona they show the world? Yeah, it's a front. Who could blame them really? Being sensitive leaves you open to so many hurts and disappointments in life. I just wish it didn't take so long to break down the wall!
6. Cancer man sits in his shell and cradles his feelings for ages. It could take him a year to 'fess up to how he feels about you. If you are wondering how to prod him in the right ways so that he will take a peak out of his shell, you're going to have to be blatant. I don't think showing devotion/emotion necessarily scares the Cancer guy away. I think it leaves him with much to think about. Give him time to mull it over while he hides. Don't ever stop prodding though!

Depends in context. If it is in context of processing emotions or a "dark mood", yes, but keep in casual light contact until he/she comes around. If it is in the context of Cheeseburger's response, aka "taking a break", his answer is also correct.

2. If you don't have a thick skin, this is not the sign for you. Yes on the thick skin. More often than not the "my Cancer man" posts here tend to reflect on the OP than the Cancer in question.
Also yes on the zinger/take you down a notch. Generally its not with an intent to hurt, IMHO.

3. If you can't tell whether your Cancer is serious or joking, ask them. Seriously. Don't walk away wondering if the last thing they said was supposed to hurt as much as it did. True.

True, except with the suck it up part.
I would rather walk away than intentionally say horrible things.
However, there is always those few who have it coming, and if there is a third party familiar with both myself and the recipient, the third party would tend to agree with me (although sometimes I'd be told "you could have been kinder about it").

5. As much as they like to pretend they don't care, they really, really do. They will sit on it. They won't speak about it. When they see you, the look in their eyes will make it obvious. Don't prod. It will come out eventually.

True for the most part.

See number 4 for this. I interpret prodding as nagging/haranguing/interrogating. Do that, and you'll never get an answer. Be direct with the questions, but give him time to answer.

Easy principle, never offer what you can't afford to lose.

Yup.

By the time it gets to that point, I already know all routes to get out. I have the map in my head. Which route I pick will depend on the interaction we had. Either way, I'm out. I tread so softly you might not even realize I'm out. You'll begin questioning if I was even there to start with.

I burned my bridge with a person once, using the exact words they used against me 10 years before. Killing with kindness.

Might not be what you were talking about J9, but that entire paragraph brought up memories/visual images in my head.
