Online dating is like if we all tried to bang our mandatory pen pal from grade school. Forget any romantic notions right now and just consider him a pen pal. Even if he thinks he's interested in more, he's under a lot of stress right now and may feel totally different when he gets home. It'd be one thing if you guys were established before he left, but this is not the time to try to start something or get something off the ground. Entertain him if you want, but don't get sucked into compromising yourself or putting your life on hold in the process.

Posted by virgosoulHonestly, I'd just enjoy the conversation and not read anything into it. I wouldn't put any eggs in this basket because of the distance. Continue to date others and keep the friendship going with this guy. Don't rule out anyone else and don't sit around waiting on this guy. (It'd be different if you were in a relationship before he left). There's no harm in that. When he moves back to the States, you'd be able to tell a lot more about where he stands. Otherwise, I wouldn't put any hope or worry until he moves back home.
