When was the last time you gave a random act of kindness? A random act of kindness can be as simple as holding the door for a stranger or allowing the man at the store, who only has one item, to go before you and your full cart. Many say that humanity has become selfish, egotistical, and uncaring, that we as humans have no compassion towards our own kind, outside of those we deem deserving.

You are walking down the street on a cold winter day, within your purse lies 10 individual $ 20 dollar bills and your life is in complete harmony. Your bills are all currently paid, your belly is full of nutritious food, and your body is warmed from the nice clothing you wear. As you continue to walk your path, you come across a man sitting on the side of the road. This man looks rough, like he has been beaten. His hair is unkept, he has not shaved in some time, his clothing's are worn out, and within his eyes there is a look of utter defeat. In his hands he holds a sign out for you to read. This sign says "please help, I am cold and hungry"!

How would you handle this situation? Would you scowl at him? Would you place judgement onto him without knowing what circumstances might have brought this man so far down? The majority of the United States population, would have walked right past this man without even the decency to look him in his eyes. Had we taken a few minutes of our time and asked this gentleman what had brought him here, we would have learned that this man is a United States Marine Corps Veteran and had spent two years in the Vietnam war. He answered his country's call to arms and by doing so he destroyed himself. This gentleman had to shoot and kill several human beings and the PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) he would suffer from because of this, would haunt him the rest of his life.

We are not one individual, we are one kind, the human kind. We are not rated by the size of our bank account, nor are we rated on the house in which we live. It's not my place to judge no man and no man will I judge. If I came across this man today, he would be given all the money in my wallet and I will leave knowing that I did what was right.

It's funny you say this, because I have recently witnessed, first hand, just how real southern hospitality is. I was born and raised in northeast Ohio, near Canton, where I've lived each of the 37 years of my life. Recently, I have visited the southern states for the first time in my life. I had job interviews at paper mills in Louisiana and Alabama. It absolutely amazed me the complete difference in culture down there and how caring and compassionate everyone was.
