It looks as if I may lose my beachhouse in Surfside this weekend. I have evacuated to my parents house about 200 miles from Houston. Hurricane Ike is going to be one for the record books, but I do hope it will not be as bad as they are predicting it to be. I do hope that my fellow Houston dxp'ers and anyone in the path of this hurricane are safe and their homes are still in one piece when they return after they say we can return.
My fiance/boyfriend decided to stay behind and bunker down the storm. I hope he will be safe. I also hope the Houston area and other affected areas are not without power for 2 weeks, as they are predicting.
If my house in Surfside is still standing when I return to Houston, I have decided that it's just too stressful to have a beach house and while it was nice to have a vacation and weekend place, it's just disheartening to see your home be washed away.

I saw it on the news. Damn nature can be overpowering ! Really hope they could evacuate everyone in time and that the people that stayed behind are good protected in there shelter !
My thoughts are with you houston and the other people living there.
thanks guys. i still have not been allowed back to houston, but all the news coverage that has shown Galveston and Surfside show to be completely under water. My beachhouse is not protected by the seawall (if you watched any of the coverage and heard about the seawall), so there's no protection from the waves. There is good news out of all this, though: my condo that I reside in in Houston was not damaged. My fiance went over to my condo to access any damages and just the fence was blown down. Over half of Houston is still without power, including my condo and my fiance's house. Power is very slowly being restored in parts of Houston, but the utility company does say to expect at worst case scenario at least two weeks before power comes back on. Look on the bright side: that'll save on my electric bill for September. 🙂
The flooding didn't harm much of Houston where I live. The worst part occured in South Houston and the mainland (the hurricane hit Galveston Island, about 20 miles from the mainland of Texas). My best friend's apartment is currently underwater because she lives in Kemah, which sits on the opposite side of Galveston Bay from my beach house.
I'm waiting to find out when we get power again so I can go home. I have seen the pictures and live coverage on TV, but I am not prepared to see in person the destruction this storm has caused. Just like New Orleans, Houston will press on. Luckily, I think we will have a lot of support and assisting in rebuilding the counties that were destroyed.
my fiance went down to surfside, tx to check out my house. he drove past it a few times because it was destroyed and is barely sitting on it's stilts. I was totally demolished from the storm. he sent me pictures of my house from his phone. I cried. Still crying...
