Dogs aren't dumb 🤦♂️🤦♂️
They can't survive on their own.
Foxes are more self sufficient than cats.. and not really great as pets except in exceptional circumstances. cats are not great on their own but can survive alone for a time.. their instincts to find water are not great compared to foxes.
Dogs will not find food but will eat anything .. and drink anything both are dangerous .. they cant clean themselves .. they cant build a home like foxes.
u sure?

Foxes can hunt. They can scavange ..they can build their own homes. They can evade traps. They can break in and excape they can survive rural and city landscapes. They clean themselves. They know how to search for water and only eat clean and drink clean.
They are wary of people /animals they dont know and read them. But they are not vicious to them and can be very affetionate to the right people.

In Native American cultures, the fox totem represents trickery, cleverness, adaptability, and resourcefulness. Yep, that sounds like a Gemini. Foxes are often portrayed as wise and benevolent guides. If a fox runs across your path, it may be that you are being asked to look at new ways of communicating with others — to think “outside the box,” and to use detachment as a coping mechanism rather than emotional meddling, or enmeshment. 🤔

i wonder why they're always associated with tricksters in various cultures 🤔🤔
Because they are.
One of the hardest animals to hunt. They also understand HOW humans hunt them and can do things like lay cross scent trails to confuse huntsmen.
In the human world we have boxes and containers .. some of these contain food and chickens .. some contain traps and dangerous machinery. Some are bins full of trash.
Foxes seem to understand the diff between box that contains something innocuous something dangerous and something they want. Not just from scent but other things.
In fox hunting there are diff types of hounds or hounds that do diff types of things. 1. Scent hounds .. hounds that will track the fox down by scent. And foxes actively live their lives trying to confuse predators of how many they are and where they are by making certain trails very pungently scented and then never going there again. 2. Flushing hounds .. hounds that simply are there to flush out the fox .. foxes will get behind them or evade them other ways.
But what is really cool is that foxes seem to understand the diff between the two types of dogs.
They also can evade birds of prey or hide from the sight of them really really well. Its why hunting foxes using birds of prey was largely abandoned.
ALso not all fox hunters wish to kill the fox and some just want to flush them or move them. And foxes seem to be able to read humans well... they know ..
What other animals understands this dog cant smell me very well? This dog can smell me well but i can use that against him and lay down a strong trail but go the other way?
But their TRUE genius .. is watching them hunt or steal.
What animal knows when to be playful fearful or agressive with which humans? But to still generally not get too involved ?
They hunt living prey to eat now. They hunt eggs to eat later .. and bury them to come back to. And if another animal SEES or SMELLS or the fox smells another animal around one of their stashes they simply dig it up and MOVE IT.
They can measure distance and location and can calculate how long a distance will take them to reach.
They avoid predators and evade them.
When hunting they sense vibrations underground for snakes or moles and dive head first to nab them.
With most predators you can see the prey the deer etc. But with a fox .. their prey sometimes is only visible to them.
Foxes also can trick humans. Almost like they are playing with them. Its not unknown for a fox hunter to take a break only for the fox to sneak up and run off with the gun or something else he needs. And then later return it or worse .. bury it.
They ABSOLUTELY have a sense of humour.
Plus the fact they can feel vibrations in the ground etc must have impressed humans.
Also they have diff calls which mean things.
Also they have SUMMER calls and WINTER calls.
Dogs just bark. Foxes sort of bark but it comes out like bark quick howl.. and its only for foxes over a long distance so a nearby fox knows a bark isnt meant for them but a fox further away. It is officially called the wow wow call. It means like hello who is there?
Then there is a whine .. which means submission or affection and dont hurt me. Cubs use it to their mothers .
Screams are for mating.
Also foxes growl in affection to cubs.. but they seem to know (clever fox) that other animals growl in aggression and they dont do this to humans..
Gekkering is fighting.
Then they have a summer bark .. and a winter bark.
Its really interesting. But most people agree the winter bark is made when there is cold weather..

That's what I'm talking about. I got a male bird and thought he would be lonely so I got a female that he ended up abusing.
I don't know if it's a compatibility issue or it's just the nature of that specific bird or maybe just birds in general but they can be scary. Then I've seen a video of this abused bird and he's pretty much traumatized and would re-enact the abuse inflicted to him by his previous owner towards the new people around him. And then some docuseries about some violent rapist birds.

I'm so glad I chose not to adopt more kittens after I got Sancho. At first I thought the same, that she would get lonely, esp since we stayed with her mom, brother and sister between ages 3-7 months and she started having fun playing with them. My dad's cats also bonded well (the two boys). But she would get very territorial over my attention and when I researched I realized how particular cats are about cohabiting with other cats, they prefer to be independent. Of course, sugar gliders are the opposite. Animal sociology is so fascinating. It's also weird to imagine birds having such complex emotional scope, considering their tiny brains :p I believe it though.click to expand

when i found an orange kitten, i brought him to my brother's cat and they get along so well that you see them constantly cuddling. feline/cat culture seem so much more loving. i've watched this docuseries about lions where this lioness did everything she can to find a pact for her cubs. one of them died on the way but she persevered in keeping the other 2 alive but then the voiceover was all like: "sometimes the female might find a suitable mate and the male would proceed to murder her cubs. the female will have new cubs with this new, dominant alpha male." they seem to have rich, inner lives straight out of a drama sometimes.
and there's some nasty real life stories that star humans with pretty much the same circumstances.

It's also weird to imagine birds having such complex emotional scope, considering their tiny brains :p I believe it though.Posted by MidAtBestThat's what I'm talking about. I got a male bird and thought he would be lonely so I got a female that he ended up abusing.Posted by virgoOPPPA few years ago I was dive-bombed by several birds, had to run down the block to escape. I think that's how a kid died in the Disney world parking lot beforePosted by TextosmoonThis makes me want to watch some docuseries about foxes or smthng.Posted by virgoOPPPBecause they are.
i wonder why they're always associated with tricksters in various cultures 🤔🤔
What other animals do you know that communicate the weather—

I think birds are super intelligent too (understands displacement, etc) but they're kinda aholes sometimes too, violent with each other but I suppose that's just how it is.

They seem moody and fragile. Volatile and violent creatures.

What a fascinating dinosaur/bird fact. You never cease to amaze.
The lioness story reminds me of Medea. I was always fond of that story bc when I took mythology in community college we had to write a prompt response on a class bulletin, the prompt being "do you find Medea a redeemable or sympathetic character?" Everyone answered "no, she's a monster". I knew that teacher was a contrarian freak so I answered "yes, she was owning her passionate anguish and expressing it freely and openly. I respect that she was true to herself". Teacher loved that shit lmao.
