Any anime lovers on dxp?

I'm just discovering it (well, re-discovering) myself and have gone through two absolutely awesome shows "Cowboy Bebop", which towards the end was surprisingly affecting, and "Black Lagoon" (one of the main characters in the latter show being my avatar), a show that's just eye-wateringly good *sniff sniff*. I've also seen "Afro Samurai".

I tried to watch One Piece, Bleach, Darker Than Black and Full Metal Alchemist but the ridiculousness of their premises not only reminded me why I'm not such a huge anime lover but also have me scared to even touch Naruto or Death Note now.

So: recommendations? TV shows only, please. (Yes, I've seen Paprika and Ghost In The Shell and besides the technical aspect i.e. the animation art etc, I'm gonna go with a huge "meh")

Arrrgh. FINE - I'll trust your verdict on Naruto but that first episode of Bleach with the internal dialogue being so expository made me cringe lol

Wikipedi-ing Kenichi now. Premise is important lol

I would recommend the following, although it seems from your initial post that you don't like the 'fantastical' elements of anime. Although I would submit 'fantastical' notions are the centre-piece of anime. It would be like disliking an albeit unique but eccentric pursuits in science fiction films/literature.

anyhow, I recommend the following

Fullmetal alchemist/FMA brotherhood- although you've stated you disliked the series, I find the storyline to be very emotionally intense, the characters develop in an interesting manner, and well it's not just brutes fighting for no apparent reason. Alot of deppth in this series, it has become my favourite.

Death Note- psychologically powerful, deals with the dynamics of pwoer and morality, but certainly an interesting watch

Neon Genesis Evangelion- Apparently the director/writer used this anime as a catalyst to get out of his own depression, and this can be witnessed as the anime progresses. It carries a pessimistic iflavour to it but I would recommend it.

I'm fucking sold, goddamit! FMAB shall be given another chance.

That last paragraph is golden, though, as I am definitely going to check out Neon Genesis Evangelion NOW.

Sweeeet...

i saw 'the end of evangelion' movie, but haven't watched the series. SO DISTURBING, lol, but i love the surrealism and religious themes tied into it. even though i barely knew wtf was going on it hit me pretty hard. interesting about the director too.

Question to OP, At which point in Full Metal Alchemist did you stop watching the series?

LOL I saw the first episode only.

It cracked me up and the fact that such a little boy's voice was coming from such a HUGE set of armour was oddly touching knowing the reason why but I think I just got distracted by the realism (sorta) of Black Lagoon and the atmosphere of Cowboy Bebop. (I was browsing anime to watch at the time. This is just a few days ago, by the way).

I'm currently enjoying Samurai Champloo (on episode 7 of 26 since starting a few hours ago) and I'm going to move on to Neon Evangelion after. All these comments about depressing and disturbing are pulling me toward it. HARD.

Perhaps I'll juggle it with FMAB to lighten things up lol
