Me figure out how this book has anything to do with leadership. For a book review I have to write. I totally get what the author is trying to SAY, but how it relates to leadership is somewhat beyond me.
Book is: "Fear of Life: A Therapy for Being" by Alexander Lowen, MD. Case anyone's read it.
His basic tenent is that we were all brought up in this society being forbidden from expressing sexual love for our opposite sex parent at a young age which gave us this fear of just BEING, always needing to ACT. He has an entire chapter about the Oedipus complex, which he then references throughout the book. Saying that every child feels sexual love for his/her opposite sex parent which is cut off by the same sex parent (through the threat of castration, bc the adults fear that it might actually become sexual, even though at this age ~4yrs old the child doesn't even understand the concept of intercourse) and it creates this neurosis where we all marry people who remind us of the parent we weren't allowed to have. And we are all unhappy in our lives because we don't know how to just BE, we always need to ACT.
Honestly if I step back from this, this therapist sounds a bit kooky. And he has a real thing for making his clients scream and cry while he touches them in odd places. But I have to do this report on it so..
The only kind of extrapolation I can come up with how this sort of relates to leadership is that maybe by reading it I can understand the motivation behind why people think the way they do, and therefore be a better leader? But I kind of think its mostly all crap so uh, I don't really think I learned anything about the way people think. Time to BS my way through this paper.. anyone want to help? How does this relate to leadership—
Yeah it almost sounded like it was the opposite of leading to me. But then I read the last 50 pages lol. Was just so freaking sick of the book I didn't think I could do it. And of course there's a direct correlation to leadership in the end. *feels sheepish*
