do you know anything about sheffield? I have to move there for a year, and aside from the marvellous tourist websites that make it look inviting in a characterless kind of way, I'm looking to find out a more personal viewpoint.

So, anyone been to sheffield?

Sheffield is an industrial city in yorkshire about 500,000 people . When I worked sales I went there quite abit. Stanly works is big there. It is about one and one half hours from london Victoria station as I recall. Been a bit sence I was there. What will your situation be.

I'll be doing an exchange at Sheffield Hallam uni. What are Stanly works? Ooooh - just did a search on them - tools and metal things. I like the industrial cities - whole different character to say... a seaside tourist city. Is Sheffield grey and foreboding with lots of warehouse areas and very little sun? Living in australia you learn to despise the sun with a passion. Getting all excited now!

Luv you will pray for sun before you leave sheffield. The only good time is may to aug here in winter the sun if it comes up does so about half eight. and goes down about half four.and it rains all winter.

Sounds heavenly!

Here, it's constantly sunny - and not pleasant sun - the kind of sun that you have to put sun screen on at 7am cause that's when your skin starts burning. Winter is even worse because there's no clouds - dry, sunny and windy in winter.
It only rains in summer, which if you're lucky is an afternoon thunderstorm that lasts for an hour. I think the longest it's ever rained straight for in my life is about two days. There's always a patch of blue sky somewhere for the sun to come through and attack you. It always comes out right after the rain and burns the water on the ground, so it feels like you're in a sauna.
If you actually want to go outside between 9am and 3pm, you either have to wear long sleeves (which creates a wonderful effect on personal hygene in 100% humidity) or smear yourself with so much sunscreen that you look like one of those long distance swimmers lathered up in goose fat (oh and it's not like I have particularly fair skin or anything). We're the skin cancer capital of the world.

So - i just want to make it clear that i will never pray for the sun. NEVER. It is my evil nemesis. I dream of meteors striking the earth and blotting out the sun for ever (well, ok, maybe i'm not that desperate). I lived in a city once where I didn't see the sun for three months - i think that may in fact have been the happiest three months of my life. LOL. You have no idea how often i fantasize about cloudy days!...mmm...overcast....

Sheffield really is beginning to sound like the perfect destination!

You must live in the outback? or the gobe ? or the western U.S. no you said humidity? you got me the summer it rains a lot sun comes up about half three am goes down about half ten pm. so there is a lot of day and it never get real dark.
