It's totally irrelevant what he did. That's not the issue I'm addressing here. And I don't feel sorry for him either, but there are bigger issues at stake-- such as where the law system is heading with this shit? But I realize this thread will be taken over by self-important reactionaries who fail to see the big picture.

Sometimes I'm surprised that we even have a legal system in a democratic society since obviousely most people seem to be against ethical treatment of human beings, even if they ARE assholes.

I agree with you.

Although it isn't so much about the "unethical" treatment in the same sense as you mean (I think)--

I think it's unethical because if he *did* deface their property, and if he *did* harass them, then I believe there are already laws on the books regarding those offenses, along with the min/max penalties for breaking them (punitive damages, etc).

I don't believe "public humiliation" is one of them.

This judge is abusing her position, imo.

Cruel and unusual punishment?

LO fuckin L!

Tell that to his disabled neighbor he terrorized for 15 years.

Poor baby. He sits cozily on his ass with a sign in Bumfuck, OH for a few hours, which few people probably saw, much less read.

At least our tax dollars isn't wasted having him fart around in a jail cell.

He got off much too easy. If I were the judge, he'd be forced to be confined to a wheelchair *with* the sign on the back of it...for a month at least.

If this is considered legally unacceptable, then it's the judicial code that needs to change.

You wont be saying that when a judge sentences you to a similar degree after you rack up all those tickets from your reckless Asian woman driving. Which is something I wanted to mention to you because yet again another incident I experienced yesterday. smh!

Cruel and unusual or unethical punishment would have been bamboo shoots under the fingernails for every year of douchebaggery. Or allowing the parents of the endangered students to beat the driver with wiffle ball bats for an hour. But spending a few hours sitting on their bum holding a sign?

Pfft. I got worse punishments for not cleaning my room growing up.

The only reason to feel embarrassment is the realization that their actions were wrong in the first place and that they should feel shame for such buttery behavior. While the judges in question probably should have stuck with sentencing precedents already on the books, these particular punishments are relatively lightweight in comparison to jail time and appear to be saving the tax payers money in the process. Mountains shouldn't be made out of molehills.
