a few days ago i watched a very interesting documentary about art - and what has become of the beauty of it. why has so much turned into a farce/originality?

Intro:
Philosopher Roger Scruton presents a provocative essay on the importance of beauty in the arts and in our lives.

In the 20th century, Scruton argues, art, architecture and music turned their backs on beauty, making a cult of ugliness and leading us into a spiritual desert.

Using the thoughts of philosophers from Plato to Kant, and by talking to artists Michael Craig-Martin and Alexander Stoddart, Scruton analyses where art went wrong and presents his own impassioned case for restoring beauty to its traditional position at the centre of our civilisation.

Nemesis, I was just talking about this very thing with BG.

You no doubt have heard the question: Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?
The answer to that question lies in the morals of the artist and his/her audience.
For the record, my intent with my "imaginary" work is a sarcastic protestation against the obscene
decadence of indecency that society has slowly become identified with, and, hopefully, a thought
provocative prelude to some serious discussion of a deeper perception and to provoke a discussion of
the conception of once high ideals and principles, morals and ethics of ages past.
Your reply is in keeping with where I had begun. Are others able to perceive these things also?
Thank you. 🙂

Art today has a pseudo-depth. There's nothing truly substantial -though, thank god, there are actual execptions -and 'artists' and viewers alike will only search to flaunt their own 'knowledge' in deciphering the meaning of an artwork.

If anyone frequents art galleries, shows and all, it's so easy to point them out. They will stand in front of a god-awful piece of crap, scratch their chin and whip out the biggest load of crap about style , technique and the psyche of the artist...smfh...just to show that they are true connoisseurs. Pfff!

That is somewhat an amusing past-time. They've always done that for the past 100 years.
It's like they didn't have a hobby, so they came up with Art Critique.
Personally, I can understand practical critique as in composition and media application methods for the
purpose of learning but to go into the artist's mind, to KNOW what he/she was thinking, that's kind of a
stretch.
I can look at my own work and psycho-analyze my own work till the cows come home and I couldn't tell you what
the devil I was thinkin'. But I could tell you that when I was in the process of producing my work, I was feeling
something that inspired the course of the work as it's progress transpired.
