I think what the wrecked scorpion is trying to get at is that when the heart is hollow, i.e. has no love, it beats at a predictable or controlled pace...aka...evenly. There is nothing to set it into confusion.

Once it's full of love or as it's filling up with love, it becomes vulnerable and the beat becomes unpredictable or uncontrollable...sometimes fast...sometimes slow...but never even.

Beat in this case is not about the SOUND the heart makes but more about pattern and how it MOVES.

So I guess he's saying some people are scared of irregularities within their hearts (figuratively speaking of course) cuz it's just too unpredictable...an even beat keeps going. An uneven one could easily stop >>> heartbreak.

Yes, newbie .. that is what I take it to mean, also .. very profound.

An empty or hollow heart is like a machine .. it just beats along and knows not to pound away with any intensity, for it doesn't feel if it's empty or hollow.

A full heart has the capacity to feel every emotion, and respond, accordingly ... it knows saddness, passion, joy, anger .. it knows how to beat these feelings through your viens so you know you are alive, and living as an emotional being.

A hollow heart might as well be dead, if it knows not how to fill you full of life.

To be vulnerable, or any other kind of emotion, to "feel" it means your heart isn't empty .. you have to care in order to feel vulnerable, and if you cannot be vulnerable .. then you cannot "care" .. and if you don't "care", then you are empty.
