I’ve only rewatched the first season once. Compared the like 5 times for the second season. It was all very different back then. Truly the aspect of Survival was way bigger than the actual game.

The cast is also very Americana and on the older side. Probst plays the storyteller of episode 1 to introduce the concept of the surviving and the social skills needed to play the game.

Fire versus Shelter comes up and some arguing over making the shelter right off the bat. Sue and other want action over talking about it, while Richard wants to talk about it as a group. Richard is a combination of helpful, negative, and very cocky off the bat. Really, this is Richard preaching team work right off the bat for an alliance. In the end, Richard does his best to get everyone on the same wavelength.

Also, One of the older ladies, Sonja is getting banged up and already has a gash on her leg.

Good to see shots of snakes already in episode 1 of the series, which continue to this day in season 40 lol

On the other tribe Pagong (Pagong would become important for a term in Survivor folklore to come) the eldest on this tribe, BB, is working hard to make the shelter while his tribemates want him to take a break. His stubbornness prevails. Gretchen starts a fire with BB’s glasses.

Back on the Tagi tribe, they struggle hard, but fail to make a fire.

The first Immunity Challenge for the first Immunity idol. It’s all about starting torches that are both in the water and on the land. Afterall, the fire of the torches will represent the players life in this game. Their torches get snuffed once they are voted out. Pagong wins the first challenge. They win immunity. They also win the matches that Tagi needed. But after Tagi’s tribal council, they will have fire thanks to the torches, but someone needs to be voted off the tribe.

Not much scrambling back in these days. It came down to a straight survival of the fittest vote. Sonja’s elder ass cost them the challenge.

Welp before Millennials ever played, there was still a young versus old dynamic. The last episode showed that, and we’re in for more.

Tagi wants to eat more than just island rats. Who wouldn’t?

One of the older guys, Rudy, is getting heat for eating more than others. Richard was hiding the fact that he is gay from 72 year old war vet Rudy, but Richard is talking about the gay life style with the rest of the group. Rudy learns Richard is gay, and Rudy finds him to be a good guy, but is awkward about it to say the least.

Pagong is still building a shelter, and BB is still pushing work ethic. Yes that too is rubbing the younger players wrong now. BB definitely is bossy though and nobody on the tribe is confronting him. BB is not fond of Ramona’s work ethic who is feeling on the sick side. His “leadership” bossiness is getting worse for some. So Joel tries to take some of the leadership into his own hands. BB thinks Joel makes promises and always comes up short. BB is not down for a democracy. The tribe was supposed to vote on decisions, but he is still making many of his own.

This episode also touches a bit upon Greg and Colleen getting close. Is it the first showmance? I genuinely don’t remember.

One of the most interesting parts of this episode is BB wanting to throw the challenge. He is trying to save face because he seems to know he may be going. Odd that he wants to quit after all of that pushing for work ethic. I see Baby Boomers learned their fuck shit from their elders.

The challenge today is eating Beetle Larvae. This is a pretty tame eating challenge compared to future seasons. Tagi wins this time.

The vote off talks come down to BB’s bossy bullshit versus Ramona’s slacking and napping. In the end it is BB voted out 6-2.

Survivor Borneo Episode 3: Quest for Food

Rudy is being to critical according to some of the women on his tribe. His overeating is still taking place as well. Stacey is onto the fact that Sue finds her the weakest on the tribe.

Pagong meanwhile play in a mud volcano.

Religious talk is taking over Tagi. It is Dirk driving that talk. Dirk, who is a virgin, has a crush on Jenna.

Reward challenge for a fishing kit is a swimming challenge. Tagi comes out on top. This helps Richard show off his spearfishing skills. He is showing himself to be valuable to the tribe.

Pagong is stuck eating rats.

Immunity challenge requires a lot of teamwork and requires the team to carry one of their members on a stretcher through the jungle. Pagong pulls it out

This means it is Tagi at tribal council with a target on Rudy. But Stacy is also seen as weak. Rudy is certain the younger people will ban together to get rid of him. Richard, trying to actually play the game, is trying to talk about the vote before tribal council, but not many are down for that. Rudy gets his way at Tribal as Rudy stays with only 2 votes against him.

Survivor Borneo Episode 4: Too Little Too Late?

Pagong is still have a ton of issues over the Shelter. The team sees Greg as calm and cool. Gretchen says he is playing the game. Perhaps this is really Greg’s game approach. To act goofy and nonchalant to not be seen as a leader or a threat. Also, Ramona is able to feel a part of the group as she starts to assert herself into the group more and work harder.

Tagi wins the SOS reward challenge and wins a spice rack. More importantly, the A word makes it’s way around camp. Alliances. Rudy is anti alliance, but Richard, Sue and Kelly are all over that. And the first real Survivor alliance is formed.

The Immunity challenge is a relay. Tagi wins once again. So it Pagong who must go to tribal council. For once this season, this is a somewhat less clear vote off. Several players on Pagong have given reasons why they should be voted off. In the end, It is Ramona who is kina voted out of the let field. She did make herself a target at first, but seemed to be turning things around. Alas, not enough.

❤️ I will always love season 1 of Survivor. The first and only season I watched because I used to watch it with my late father shortly before he passed away. We both bonded over it.

Pagong is looking rather dire as a whole right now. Low energy. Illness. Disagreements on the last vote off.

Another episode heavy on the Survival aspects from fishing to building.

Pagong gets their spirits lifted from winning reward. They won fruit and some chickens who they name Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

The Alliance on Tagi are starting to make moves as they talk about the order in which the next players should go if they lose immunity. Pagong wins immunity after Gervase says he loves to spotlight and does help his tribe win. Kelly, who calls herself a “water all-star” does not help Tagi in this swimming challenge. You would think that would make her a target, but wait, she is one of the only people on Tagi wanting to work within an alliance, and is in the alliance with Richard and Sue.

Dirk is the goner in a 4-1-1 vote

Lots of talk about the first ever Merge (Merger as they call it at the time) that will be happening in 3 days where the two tribes become 1.

It’s chicken eating season for Pagong from the chickens they won at the last reward challenge. Gervase is getting in some trouble with his mouth with some unflattering comments about women being dumb basically.

Richard is concerned with the Merger as he has built an alliance on Tagi, but once the merge happens he needs to find a way to continue to control the votes. Richard also decides to get naked both in front of his other tribemates and for confessionals.

Pagong wins reward again. Gervase leads a discussion on how they need to stick together at the merge.

Tagi wins immunity.

At Tribal, Jeff brings up comments Gervase made comparing women to cows and Jenna says that Joel basically agreed with him.

Joel is voted out 6-2
