And when it doesn't come to fruition? This doomsday prophecy may be the catalyst for societal collapse on a grand scale!

There are people who have given up everything, spent every penny to their name and wracked up all kinds of debt because they have such faith in what Camping is postulating. As a result, will we see an increase in suicide in the days and/or weeks to follow as the reality sets in that they are now desolate? Will we see an increase in foreclosures? Homelessness? Unemployment?

Bad timing on Camping's part giving the current economic state of affairs around the world and international turmoil.

And what about those who may have not taken such drastic steps, but have such strong belief in Camping's position, unwavering faith in their religious beliefs and chose to live their lives according the scriptures. Will this demographic group feel such despair for the fact that they have somehow let the Lord down and also be subject to higher suicide rates? Or, will they lose their faith and therefore no longer feel the need to be a Good Samaritan or law abiding citizen?

Again, the prospects are not good under such circumstances and may have a detrimental effect on society as a whole.

Finally, what of those who do not fit into the 2 groups already described — those who do truly believe in Camping??s position but believe there is a rationale for why they were not —chosen?? on 5/21 (e.g. life choices)? With the impending end of the world to occur on 10/21, will persons who fit into this category also have increased suicidal ideations so as not to suffer in the months to come? Will this group be prone to an increased life of crime and/or poor decision making?

The potential for increased mayhem, chaos and social disorder to arise from this third class are also disturbing and potentially devastating.

Thus, in theory, if the rapture does not occur on 5/21, as calculated by Camping:

1) We will see an increase in suicide mortality rates (with rates being greatest among the first demographic group and much more modest among the third).

2) Societal ills, already stressing systems in place throughout the world, will increase dramatically leading to an unprecedented economic downturn domestically and abroad.

3) There will be increased social discord resulting in a rapid rise in violence and criminal activity, leading to the potential for rioting in the streets.

4) Due to scale of the preceding events, economic failure will be inevitable.

5) To follow suit, discord within and between nations will increase.

6) Finally, the US, along with other free nations, will impose martial law under the auspice of national security, restricting all movement within and between domestic and international borders.

All in all, it is theoretically possible, that the world (as we know it) will come to an end on 10/21 — thereby fulfilling at least one of Camping??s prophecies!

He didn't say end of the world, that's what the mockers said .. he said it was the time of the Rapture, while the world would continue for six more months.

seriously ... if you guys are going to make spectacles out of yourselves .. you should get it right.

There is nothing wrong with a person having a belief different from your own, and if you would talk like you do about a person who believes differently, then you're probably going to be left behind when that day arrives.

@P, the mockery is not of someone with different beliefs, it is the extent to which they take it and the cattle mentality which exists in society!! And we all know the end of the world is October 21, 2011 anyway.

On another note, maybe Camping is being used by Satan so that people question their faith and what they believe in, thereby resulting in feeling disenfranchised by Christianity and the religious tenants of the bible...

lol P lighten up. So this is the beginning of the end. That is what he said, but that's not how it ends up being communicated.

This guy having a belief like this is problematic for people who believe him and decide to quit their job or spend their savings. There have been a number of such doomsday forecasts over the years and they have made some people act in very peculiar ways until the day when they suddenly realise that it's not happening. I for one think they are extremely unhelpful.

You can make such a prediction "fit" your version of reality just as you can make astrology fit your list of characteristics. Because certain people have apparently predicted other things (well based on us making this "fit") doesn't mean that they in any way know about the end of the world. Apparently a whole load of people evacuated Rome a couple of week's ago because some seismologists had predicted a massive earthquake would destroy it on a specific date. Interestingly that was the day of the Spanish earthquake, but rome was untouched. I think such nonsense just panics people unnecessarily over something that is unpredictable. We cannot control everything.

I don't believe the world will end in six months or in 2012. But I'm sure some people will make a lot of money out of those who assume it will.

Camping prophesied that at '6 pm today, (local time around the world) the "saved" would ascend to heaven and the rest of us would be wiped out by October in earthquakes, floods, and war.' Not really prophetic.

Does anyone have a camcorder on Harold Camping to watch him disappear and be "recalled"? If they're still here with us, after 6 pm PST today, are he and his followers all going to commit suicide? Btw, this is the SECOND TIME Harold has predicted the end of the world. He said he didn't have the "math" correct the first time in 1994!

Camping's web site has gone dark! You don't suppose..... 😕

Oh well, for the rest of us carpe diem people! 😄

So, so true... i.e., listen to your own words!

I listen to my own words all the time and anyone who pays attention realizes it. The problem arises that people don't pay attentin and falsely believe I say something to them that I don't say to myself.

Whether or not rapture happens today or not doesn't matter to those who believe in their faith. I've made threads about cults before and I think they are beautiful things for those people who lives are enriched by it.

So what if people give away their life savings ... is it your bank account ??

No ?? the stfu ... these people are allowed to express their faith in any way that they choose to.

Ummmhmmm and freedom of religion prompted the drinking of the kool-aid. Anyone can believe what they choose too, as is everyone free to point fingers and have a laugh. I sincerely doubt this discussion here will sway the 'true believers' from their faith.
And no, no one was left behind. No great resounding noise occurred to make even the smallest rock vibrate and give song to highest of high. I doubt highly that it's a keening whistle on a pan-flute that only a dog can hear.

LOL Awwwwww. I heart cake shows. Chocolate is a good choice, it doesn't have to be double raspberry truffle with ganache to taste amazing. I usually make a nice sturdy homemade cake. Let's see, the ones I make most often are standard chocolate, a sour cream and mini chocolate chip ( richer, almost cheesecakey it's so dense ), chocolate/peanut butter and red velvet.
