Clearly that'd be a double whammy if you lost one or the other. I guess if you're about to settle down, it'd be ideal if your SO was your best friend.

For me best friend status requires at least a few years. To reach boyfriend status it doesn't take nearly as long. So best friend.

Earlier in life girlfriend but later in life would be best friend, then spouse or both if they are the same person.

Break up with bf hurts more immediately but best friend for me lasts for years.

About two - three years ago, my ex had just broken up with me.
And my best friend at the time of (12 years) was getting annoyed that I was talking to other friends about the breakup.
Like, she hated that I would get her advice and then someone else's...
I was talking about the breakup a lot and it annoyed her.
The next day, my Aunt passed, so I was even more emotional.
And my friend wanted to have this major confrontation with me.
I told her I couldn't do it. She deserved the talk when I'm not so hysterical.
She flipped out, told me I was a shit friend, and she hasn't spoken to me since.

I think overall, losing her hurt more, than my ex in the long run.
We were friends since elementary school.
I didn't expect a betrayal like that, so...
