Amazon/Paypal/eBay still use the regular financial system, they are tied in with credit cards and banks for clearing transactions.

BitCoin is a completely new currency and transactions don't clear through normal banking channels. Transactions are cleared anonymously using peer to peer computing similar to how bit torrent downloads work. The other big thing is that there is no country backing this currency. It is an international currency, but it's not under the control of any government. The guy who came up with this is the ultimate cyber-rebel in my book.
