I want to buy a new car but I don't know anything about cars. I would like a fuel economy car that doesn't cost a lot to insure or cost a lot for repair and upkeep. I don't need a car with frills and fancy glitter. What are some questions that I can ask the dealer? How can I avoid being scammed? I like sedans but are they most economical? Which make is good? Help!

You said two things in your OP that made my heart smile: sedan (b/c they are 4-door and roomy when I LOVE SIZE) and new (because a new car will keep you out of the auto shop). So, so far, you're on the right track!! 🙂

Allow google to be your friend and research, research, research, this way when you go to the dealer and they start talking this 'n that, you'll have more knowledge, which will equal more power, which will give you more leverage and even, through negotiating, save you some money on the final price. Also, take a man with you when you go shopping because if you go alone, or with a girlfriend, I'm thinking they will try to take advantage of you.

Yes, sedans are nice and yes, I do want a "new" car. A lot of people are trying to tell me about used car places and auctions. I don't want to go through that. I will continue to try google. I have already been doing some research. It's tough though, LoL.

The leaf doesn't run on gas. I heard about somebody having to get a jump to get the car going, kind of like a car with an old battery. I love the earth. I do care, but I don't want a car that scares me.

I think the convertible mini is really cute, and in the 20-23k price range. It's also stylish and I'm not sure what the resale value is but the fact they've kept the same body for so long makes it one of those cars you can totally beat up just for their nostalgic love of the car. They have some power too. The convertible is so cute. There is also the version with the two doors in the back, it seems bigger.

BUT I did have one while my car was in the shop at bmw, and the only problem I found with it is that its so small people don't see you on the road. I was almost run off the road a couple times.

Orr the civic hybrid is cute too. Not much power though, not compared to the 3 series that I drive.

I think my next car will be an accord, which still doesnt have the power but I like how reliable they are.

I don't really like small cars. I will take a look though. Doesn't have much power? Eh.

Take a guy with you to the dealership, or a sagittarius lol. I've been with my mom (a sag) when she's purchased more than 8 cars and I notice that if you don't give in easily, and ask them for credits or free fees like registration etc, just beat them up and they will give at some point. fees can amount to a couple thousand. I've also seen another sag get 6k off the sticker price and walk out with upgrades on a g35--wtf! If someone isn't helping you, just walk around looking kinda pissed off and complain about your sales guy to the next he'll want to scoop you up lol. I personally will not deal with the intial floor of any service, and request to negotiate sales with a manager or someone who understands sales better and the compromises I'm willing to make. Similar to what I do when taking job offers, what can you do for me? What can can I do to get the car.. you see?

Yes, I see that I need to go find a sag man....soon.

PS- a MINI in CALIFORNIA?? On these freeways? Hells no.

I know, right? Like I said before, I don't like small cars. I'm pretty tall (5'7) and I like space anyway. I love sedans. I will be aiming to put $ 5,000 down at signing and I'd like to get a car that is between $ 11 and $ 22,000. I'd love to find a car in between though. I just fear getting scammed. You know what I mean?

Amethyst - I get the impression she's looking for a newer car. The 2nd link is kinda pointless. Oh and I don't care how often Tahoes are stolen they are attractive SUV's!! Chicago is known for terrible crime, auto theft didn't seem to be something she was concerned with, but I could be wrong.

Yea, I was reading these posts and used car topics keep coming up. I DO want to purchase a new car. It doesn't have to be a Mercedes but "new".

Oh, uh, yeah, uh... a tape deck, some Creedence tapes. That's all you need, really...
