Posted by sultrykittyThere are some vague things in that article. What exactly they are comparing etc.
I noticed that they equate education with "school quality". They are not the same, and a highly paid educator isn't any more likely to be a good teacher than a well-bred child will be a good student.

Is calculus studied during high school?

Posted by HellDoradoThe problem with the economic rankings is that the data is a little old. Texas and N. Dakota are ranked at the top, but they're both taking a major hit to the oil industry right now, and have been sliding that way for a couple of years now.
i thought it would be interesting to compare education level to economic strength
http://www.businessinsider.com/state-economy-rankings-q1-2015-2015-3?op=1
,
Colorado, which scored 2nd in education, was 3rd in economy, as might be expected.
i think what we should all take from this is that marijuana legalization is not the end of the world. kudos colorado, and good job on having some of the most beautiful roads in the country, and also for having a damn good zoo (cheyenne mountain). in honor of these accomplishments, here is a song by a native coloradoan about a city that i lived in as a child:
(shamless repping of the centennial state. of all the states i've lived in, it remains my beloved)
however, Arizona and Nevada, which were bottom of the barrel in education, were top 20 in economy. strongest economy Q1 2015 goes to North Dakota, which was rated as "Mexico" in education. Some of the north-eastern states which were high in education, such as new york, scored high in economy as well. but others, such as new jersey (changed to Canada) were rather low in economy (35th).
in other words, a correlation between education and economy is tenuous at best. this is not to downplay the importance of education, i just find it curious.

I'd like to add this is bs list!
Washington state is no Hong Kong! If they're comparing Seattle the city to Hong Kong fine, but the rest of the state is probably worst education then Liberia!
? I'm just saying our state rankings are pretty pretty bad!!!!

Posted by WhiteChocolateNice. It is about that time to start seedlings.Posted by CancerOnTheCuspYou just reminded me I have to troll the salvage shops this weekend for some old windows to turn the sandstone flower box out front into a miniature greenhouse for spring veggies.Posted by WhiteChocolate"Yes, I am one of those backwards rednecks who has never heard of a 'Kardashian'. Oh, those organically grown vegetables? They're not for sale. Or I should say, they're not for sale to you, you over educated pretentious asshole. Oh right, I'm sure you'll sue in order to make me sell them to you to prove a point. In the meantime, you'll have to figure out how to grow your own. Now I suggest you get out of here before I put rock salt in your backside."click to expand

Posted by HellDoradoWOAH! Texas got bumped to 29th place! That's a huge push back, too. I'm happy for Colorado and Washington. Hopefully their example with marijuana will get the other states to follow faster. Even though CA was the first to legalize medicinal use, we still haven't legalized all use. Seems that the states who have legalized it are doing impressively well. Pot beats oil....and it's green. lolPosted by MoonArtisthere we go, a little more recentPosted by HellDoradoThe problem with the economic rankings is that the data is a little old. Texas and N. It compares the education levels of each state to the education levels of other countries.
I understand the United States is a big country and each state has their own policies, but it's still sad to see states lagging behind. Meanwhile, states like Colorado, Vermont, Connecticut, and Massachusetts are doing very well.
I know Pennsylvania, my home state, cut back on their education budget. Meanwhile, we are on the same education level as Kyrgyzstan. I can take a guess that most people in the state don't even know what area of the world that country is in.
What country is your state compared to?
