"You have to just REALLY want to quit."

That's pretty much it, as with any addiction.

Its funny cuz a lot of times we think we want to quit, but we really don't, because of how dependent we've become of the ciggs. Its pretty scary to imagine your day w/o them.

I just basically told myself it was me or the ciggs. Who is stronger? I couldn't let a measly cigg win, and that's how I looked at it..like a battle.

I might have a cigg or two(or three or 4) if I'm having some drinks, but the key is to never buy a pack so you're not left with any the next day. I just bum them off people instead 🙂

Good Luck, Sweets.

I heard they can cause depression and suicides!! Which is why I halved the dose!!! Fuck that shit!!

You have to just REALLY want to quit... and then NEVER go back!

Yep. I think people use the excuse that it's physically addictive to convince themselves they shouldn't even try. Like what a cop out. You get a headache and get irritable for a couple days. boo-fricken-hoo.

My dad smoked for like 20 years and one day just decided he didn't want to anymore and quit cold turkey.
Sure, he got a headache and felt edgy for a day or two. But since that he's never touched another - can't even stand the smell of it now.

When the first warnings about tobacco were published more than 20 years ago, many experts thought that smoking was ''no different than compulsive potato chip eating,'' says Dr. Henningfield. Not smoking was apparently just a matter of willpower. But it is now clear, according to Dr. Henningfield, that smoking is a subset of compulsive behavior in which the controlling factor, nicotine, profoundly affects the smoker's central nervous system, producing pleasurable effects, dependency and, when it is taken away, withdrawal.

This finding has been long believed but only recently proved through tests that meet today's scientific standards. It stems from extensive modern research into the nature of drugs of abuse, made possible through the development of highly specific testing equipment. Heroin, cocaine, alcohol, amphetamines and nicotine, it turns out, have many things in common. They affect the nervous system through different routes, but their end results are similar: people become dependent on them.

''Heroin addicts say it is easier to give up dope than it is to give up smoking,'' says Dr. Sharon Hall, a psychology professor whose research at the University of California's San Francisco medical school centers on methods of curtailing drug abuse.

Chantix works but the side effects can be horrible. I quit a few times while on it with no prob, only to return when the going got rough. But, this last go around on the meds I couldn't sleep and felt sick 24/7 and still wanted that smoke, so I cold turkey every couple of days. My Virgo basically said my smoking was a deal breaker as he doesn't want to watch me kill myself (isn't that sweet)... so they must go!

Maybe you started smoking again because youre dealing with a bigger issue in your life at this moment?

I was thinking this when soul searching, I've had 5 good friends die of cancer, 3 ex-smokers and this year started quite low. Think I was punishing myself and body with the who cares attitude!

Going cold turkey today, that's how I have stopped before. Have bought myself some spray from the health shop to help. Hardest part will be when my daughter returns tomorrow, will have to tell her she cant smoke or have any around me for a few weeks. Geez feeling like one now and it's real early!!! Amazing I've only been smoking on a regular basis for 4 weeks and before that was a couple of puffs here and there!!!

Strangely enough, I've stopped drinking since I started smoking and also I eat more because I really cant stand the taste after I've had one and try and wash it away!@! The worst is the smell, my hair stunk the other day and I know I dont want to walk around smelling like that!!! Try and keep these things in mind when I get weak...

Sweethearts .. I smoked for 38 years and have been a non-smoker now since Feb 2009.

For years, decades, I tried to quit to no avail ... and I finally realized that it's because I still wanted to smoke. Just like you, I had thoughts in my head of relevance to smoking.

It's not a drug, it's not gum, it's not cold turkeys .... it's a thought.

You cannot quit something, because to doso means that you have the thought in your mind of what you are quitting, so it's still there.

Those comments are all you have, and they are ALL keeping smoking thoughts in your head .. which is what you cannot do if you want to be a non-smoker.

ARe you going to talk about eating potatoe chips and McDonalds if wanting to lose wieght?
No, you are going to change your diet, aren't you?

There's no such thing as a diet .. because alls you think about are cheeseburgers ... you change your THOUGHTS ... you change your diet, you become a health eater.

I am a junk food junkie and I'm currently making myself miserable by constantly thinking about how much I want a cheeseburger.

You are a smoker, you are telling yourself you are a smoker .. therefore you will always be one.

All of the times I tried to quit, for nearly 4 decades, I never could no matter what I did to try and quit, because to quit something means I am one.

I can only be a quitter if I'm a user.

I never quit smoking ... I became a non-user, I'm a non-smoker and never think in terms of making a relationship with smoking with other things in my life.

It's actually that easy.

I loved being a non-smoker and I remember a friend asking someone to move away from me because they were smoking and I couldn't handle the smell...that was only Nov last year!

Yes, I get what you are saying P, it's my reasoning why I think I should stop...it's a start. I DONT WANT TO BE A SMOKER (My mind)..the hardest part is making sure I dont give into the body craving it!

The mind is willing but the body is weak....

I've gotten through the day without one and havent really missed it, it crossed my mind maybe once...I then had a glass of wine with dinner and a 2nd...prob shouldn't have swapped one for the other bcos now I want a smoke!!! None in the house so it's not happening. Will make sure tomorrow I dont have a wine either til I overcome this!
