How do they come up with these names? Sandy, Katrina, El Ninho, etc. We are currently watching tv @ work and all they are talking about is, Sandy and I was discussing it with my coworker. And btw we sympathize, America, we really do and we hope this one passes very soon. About the names, they seem kind of bland compared to the destruction and chaos they leave behind and their names dont suit at all. Why not 'hurricane bring-it' or something of sorts? I hope all of you guys and your families are safe and sound, and i also pray for the safety of all others- i really mean that from the depths of my heart. Peace

Forgive me, but I cant help to see humour in everything- the names actually remind me of that saying, 'a lady in the street but a freak in the sheets'. The package is so pretty, innocent and unassuming, but it rocks your world. Sandy sounds like a lady unlike her real behavior and actions. Katrina is slightly fitting, its sounds like a name of some mexicana chica with attitude. Who come up with the names?

On the names - I did a paper on that when I was in journalism school. So many years ago...but I think it goes like this. I may have forgotten some of it. The national weather service chooses names a few years ahead of time. They try to use all nationalities. Each year they start with A, then B, etc with a name from each letter. And the hurricanes/tropical depressions get named in order as they hit around the world. When they began running out of female names, they started using men's names. They will keep reusing names until one does a considerable, rememberable amount of damage. So you're not likely to see another Camille or Hugo or Katrina or Andrew or Ike and so forth.

Interesting, they keep reusing names, then how do they know which is which when it hits again?

Most of them are just tropical storms that never actually build into a true hurricane. They won't be rememberable. The one's that are memorable and cause damage don't get used again. Those names are retired. I think there are about 6-8 years before the name cycle is reused.
