If looking for a new friend/family member. There are many animals sitting in shelters and foster homes that are in need of a permanent home. Many people consider these animals somehow 'broken' (especially dogs). This is not usually the case! As for dogs, there are rescue groups representing all breeds, many will transport across the country at no extra charge for the right placement (there are even private pilots dedicated to this cause - Pilots N Paws - who transport as well!).

If you're not ready to adopt, consider fostering - this goes for cats and dogs (warning, many first time fosters often cannot part and end up adopting - fostering is a great thing to fail at!). If you don't want to adopt or don't have the means to foster but want to help, consider assisting in transport, many trips are only about an 1hr one way and you can feel good that you are making a difference!

Here's a great story that I recently came across of a 'broken' dog which prompted my post

Every 10 seconds in America we kill a perfectly healthy, loving sweet dog. Every 10 seconds of every hour of every single day of the year. Some people call it madness, but the real madness is that every single one of these deaths is totally and completely preventable. The real madness is the reason that these dogs are at the shelter in the first place and cannot find a home. These dogs are killed because some people would rather buy a pet from a breeder or a pet store. These dogs are killed because some people just get bored of their dog. These dogs are killed because some people like to breed their dogs and then realize they just can't deal with a litter of puppies. These dogs are killed because some people have a new baby and they just don't have time for their old dog. These dogs are killed because some people think that shelter dogs are dirty and have issues. It's hard to believe but these are some of the actual reasons that every 10 seconds a dog has to die by gas chamber, heart stick, lethal injection or gun shot to the head. Some people need to get the hell over themselves and understand that their actions have very real consequences, only then will this madness truly come to an end.

The amazing work of Mark Barone:

All dogs represented were healthy and adoptable, yet killed anyway. When completed, Mark will have painted a total of 5,500 of those needlessly killed. His work will be displayed in the first memorial museum of its kind in the world to represent the 5,500 shelter dogs killed every single day in the US.
