Our property butts up to a National Forest, and my dogs always ran freely .... and there was a certain path that my late Yorkshire Terrier always ran down, on into the forest.

Well, the Golden Retriever still watches the opening of the path for the terrier to come home. Sometimes, he goes to the opening and just barks and barks. I can tell that the barks are like beacons because he's barked liked that down the path before when I've called the dogs home and the Yorkie was in the forest.

He doesn't realize yet, that his buddy is dead, and I guess he thinks he's still in the forest. I suppose animals must not realize time because it's been two months since I had to put the Yorkie to sleep.

The Goldie is staring at the opening of the path now.

It's ok, and thank you both. My husband and I have had animals our whole marriage (nearly 29 years) ... and the facts of life are .. we out-live our animals. So, losing him was inevitable. We have a pet cemetary just as the edge of the forest, just inside our property line and he's the first dog out there ... lots of cats.

Anyway, yeah, I don't know how long he's going to look for his buddy to come home. The Goldie will be 9 this year, so he's elderly .... and I know it's a hard knock to lose his friend at his ripe old age. But, the Goldie is also very close friends with one of our blind cats, who will turn 16 in July ... and he takes the cat outside. It's really heart-warming to watch it .. we didn't teach the dog to do it, he just instinctively knew that his kitty pal has to be watched like a hawk and guided out doors.

I love my animals .. I love animals more than I do people.

He's a gentle giant, and I got him specifically for the Yorkie, who was around two years old and badly abused by his original parents. He had a great personality, but, was a snapper .. especially when we moved too fast because he was kicked all the time.

The Golden Retriever was bought at 6 weeks old and raised by the Yorkie ... we knew we needed to get the terrier a brother that could/would calm him down, get him to relax. By the time the baby (Goldie) was two years old, the terrier stopped biting, and began to recover.

He just naturally looks after people and other animals .. the only thing I've taught him is to sit and give me his paw.

^^^^^this I can identify with....as I'm writing my young Border Collie (aka Fella) is curled up sleeping next to me = doesn't talk just comforting....He'll be running round like a little nutter later when I'm ready to sleep and I'll be mad for a nano then tickle his tummy and smile to myself because his simplistic innocence is uncomplicated and soothing
