My aunt was known to be bipolar for as long as I've been alive or longer. She routinely refused to take her meds and for about a decade in her 50's was a step above homeless.

She had a strike and was put into a retirement home where she received health care, including thyroid treatment (her entire family has hypothyroidism)...after which her bipolar diagnosis was reversed and she no longer needed to take lithium.

It's thought that a good number of people with untreated or undiagnosed hypothyroidism are wrongly diagnosed with mental illness, because low thyroid levels affect neurotransmitter activity in the brain.

1) Do you know the sun/moon sign of both your aunt and uncle?
2) What did your uncle do following the divorce?
3) Did they have any children together?

I don't know their star signs. My uncle still loved her deeply, he just couldn't be married to her. He continued throughout her life to keep track of her and would help her out of situations she would get in. He lived in Iowa and she moved around the east coast a lot.

When she had her stroke, he paid for her residency at the retirement home (along with her disability money) and the rekindled their relationship although they never got back together.

They have a son (my cousin) but he was already in college when she left. He's got aspergers or something; highly intelligent (genius level), was an adjunct calculus professor at Johns Hopkins but then moved to Maryland. I don't know what he does for work, but he's a very odd guy.

Hmmmm. I'm sorry to hear that.
I see a pattern. That is, sadly, all too common.

My ex was bipolar. Sometimes I think I'm bipolar. Maybe I should get an assessment?
It might be a good idea. I don't think it hurts to know what one's own problems are and research for potential solutions to those problems.
Sun Tzu said "Know your enemy and know yourself. For if you know your enemy and yourself, in a thousand battles you will not see peril"
Now, what if it turns out "We have seen the enemy and he is us!" IF you are your own enemy, then identify those things which make you
your own enemy and change those things so that you are neither an enemy to yourself nor anyone else.
