Having spent the eve of their anniversary drawing lines in the sand, Mitch hoped to mitigate any resentment from the missus by spending lavishly.

The expresion, "draw a line in the sand" is often used incorrectly. It means to do something pointless.

HSD suggested "mitigation". Personally, I like "tomfoolery"...oh, and "lackadaisical". Do you have something better?

'disculpen las molestias' is a road sign that you see in spain where there are road works. it means 'sorry for the inconvenience' but i thought it meant 'discipline molesters'.

i LOVE those shoes SS. have you heard about these 8 inch heels that are de riguer right now? not sure i could walk in them personally but at least i would be able to make eye contact with more people LOL.

no, i haven't seen the 8 in heels of which you speak. although, i've seen cate blanchett in 7 in heels. i think it was cate blanchet. anyway, i'd literally fall, break my neck, and die in those.
