don't know why i'm fascinated with this show

i'm not even white lol

Wow, they're so wholesome. They are definitely not native Georgians. I'd bet they come from the Northern midwest, and they're from a Mormon or Quaker family.

they're in the fundamentalist wiki

i'm not surprised that moriah and micah are a little more progressive than their family members though

but at the same time, even though i think the isolation might actually be good (my own personal preferrence)... maybe forcing it on the kids might not be best

though i have to say, i can see the matriarch be like an aqua sun/pisces moon coz she gives me that elizabeth holmes vibe

What's the fundamentalist wiki? I just noticed they don't have Southern accents. Occasionally someone from the south won't have one, because they'll intentionally rid themselves of it, but it's usually one kid in the family or something.

@Fanta is it a status thing that whole accent shift?

It's complicated, but yes. In my experience, the kids who were straight A students and ended up moving away from our small town were the ones more likely to shed their accents. I think they saw the accent was going to limit them in the world. I kind of fall in that group. I've known other people whose accents have gotten stronger since this whole southern resurgence with Trump thing, like they're intentionally embracing the culture along with the accent.

I have a chameleon ear and end up talking like the people I'm around, so my accent comes back immediately when I'm on the phone with my southern family. Hearing the accent can make me have instant associations, some good, some bad.

but wouldn't it be better to just keep the accent?

if people find out where you're from, won't that be weird?

i guess shifting accent's always a status thing anywhere

though i've noticed lots of american politicians like to keep their accent and people consider it charming/charismatic that they do so

I smiled throughout...I find their innocence adorable...a lot of people probably cringe at how out of touch they are with mainstream society, but I think its fascinating...always interested in any sort of alternative way of living...families are basically small cults we're born into and he's having a deconversion experience....

this guy reminds me so much of the capricorn

his family originally lived in a very isolated, mountainous area

and he keeps telling me we'll live in the mountains maybe 2 years from now and raise our kids there

he's never even had iced coffee until we met coz he says they only consume 'natural stuff' there lol he's probably referring to the overt sugar

I hung out with a hippy family for a weekend one time. Their kid was about 10 and had never tasted refined sugar, and one of the people I was with had a chocolate bar, so his parents allowed him one bite.

It was like...

agreed....I cringe hard when someone I'm getting to know is like "we're exactly alike!" but I usually know that's just cuz I've been being fake to relate to them lol....I've never been interested in dating people from my own cultural background...I dated an Italian girl for a short while once upon a time and it was ok for a bit, but she really wanted to pigeon-hole me into this stereotypical idea of a man she had, based on her own family experience and I couldn't do it...

lol...what? They're great people IME...

In my old condo, my neighbors were Mormon (not the polygamist sect still taking orders from an imprisoned Warren Jeffs obviously). They became like family. It was actually shocking how kind they were. At first, I noticed whenever the husband would fertilize his lawn, he'd come over and do mine as well. He'd also treat the outside of my place for bugs. Always asking if I needed help with anything, and I did eventually....He was really handy.

They invited me over for dinner and we'd talk for hours, we watched documentaries together. I found them to be extremely open-minded even around religious/metaphysical subjects. I remember they invited my girl and I to a birthday party for a member of their family at the pool in our complex. There were like 100 people there with blonde hair/blue eyes, and just me and my Peruvian gf hanging out in the middle of them, and I've never felt more accepted or comfortable lol....The husband eventually was diagnosed with a brain tumor and he deteriorated rapidly. He became partially paralyzed, and I used to have a baby monitor in my place, listen for him if he fell trying to get up at night to use the bathroom, and go over to help the wife pick him up....I've never been that close with any neighbors...

Often throughout my life I've found these sort of cultish groups to just be better at socializing/group-bonding, even with outsiders, even though they're often very ideologically insulated in some ways....just my experience though...

They definitely have community support down but I know a lot of shit that goes on below that. They are nice as hell to outsiders too in order to try and have a good name in the community. It’s all pretty on the surface but kids get abused like hell.

The Pisces grew up Mormon and his whole family is from long lines of Mormons from Utah so I’ve heard a lot of shit.

I've heard and read about much of the stuff around Utah, particularly the abuse that went on espec. in the FLDS group that remained polygamist and under Jeffs' centralized leadership/control, but there is a lot more to Mormonism than that, and there are definitely more "liberal" strains and denominations. These folks were basically New Agers in their spiritual beliefs, the more we got to talking - we even talked astrology on occasion.

as much as i'm usually annoyed and disgusted by the tribal-clique tendencies of some people over the internet, i can't help but think it probably makes one more 'civilized' in that the most highly evolved ancient peoples gathered in order to build a society which is funny

coz most intellectuals and highly educated people in modern times always claim to be INTROVERTED

a departure from the concept of the true 'civilized' nature

makes me wonder if my preferrence for isolation and getting wisdom tooth pain are signs of me being a less evolved creature than most

So he is one of 5 kids. All of the kids essentially went through various periods of rebellion. The second oldest is the only one that still practices.

He was never sheltered due to their life style . I won’t go into details since it’s his personal story but it was really fucked up.

The Mormons still come to our door every once in a while because his mother gives them our info. šŸ™„

He said he doesn’t mind the belief system necessarily but he doesn’t believe in how it’s applied.

He has a definite guilt mode and he will help anyone and everyone and has a very strict code so he can overextend himself.

there was very little tv outside of news and dramas that i never cared about at that age

but i had a nanny and i read a lot

and all my teachers were deeply religious

but we moved to the city when my parents can't stand each other anymore

this looks interesting..would watch lol...

thought they were Mormons at first glance...

I love Mormons...

LMAO

Often throughout my life I've found these sort of cultish groups to just be better at socializing/group-bonding, even with outsiders, even though they're often very ideologically insulated in some ways....just my experience though...

as much as i'm usually annoyed and disgusted by the tribal-clique tendencies of some people over the internet, i can't help but think it probably makes one more 'civilized' in that the most highly evolved ancient peoples gathered in order to build a society which is funny

coz most intellectuals and highly educated people in modern times always claim to be INTROVERTED

a departure from the concept of the true 'civilized' nature

makes me wonder if my preferrence for isolation and getting wisdom tooth pain are signs of me being a less evolved creature than most

I think that's just a consequence of Western analytic thought developing in tandem with individualism, post-industrial revolution. Collectivist societies really existing more as a necessity of survival, and save for the very elite/wealthy within them (who are somewhat isolated socially), no one really had the time/means to devote their lives to intellectual pursuits.

Especially in Salt Lake City there are definite liberal pockets, but there is abuse and misconduct outside of the ā€œcultā€ versions. It’s covered up and buried for the sake of these old white men.

One of the Pisces biggest problems was the racism within the order as well. Like who gets to ascend to certain roles vs who can’t.

I'm sure....just like I'm sure these sorts of abuses can exist and be covered up in any social group, though some models, particularly with strong authoritarian hierarchies can foster it more readily. I just haven't seen any reason to believe that its more prevalent in the wider culture of Mormonism that rejects the doctrines of the FLDS than anywhere else....could be wrong though. I think its fairly common for secular critics of any religious group, or even critics with opposing religious views, to over-exaggerate the incidence of abuse or corruption relative to the wider population, as we see in child abuse/molestation within the RCC.

power and privilege are both isolating by nature

i think the elites had the MOST time for everything intellectual, romantic and social

might have been an aristocrat that wrote the first love letter even

they had the resources to take up intellectual and scientific pursuits

to be poor was to always be working in the fields, perpetually working the land with not much free time for anything else

this guy reminds me so much of the capricorn

his family originally lived in a very isolated, mountainous area

and he keeps telling me we'll live in the mountains maybe 2 years from now and raise our kids there

I think its great when members of a couple come from very different walks of life....I bet she's having a blast just introducing him to different experiences - one of my favorite things about a relationship....

i think so too coz it's exciting to learn things from each other

his family's got a whole plantation and i'm excited to learn about the land

it's so boring to be too similar outside of goals

agreed....I cringe hard when someone I'm getting to know is like "we're exactly alike!" but I usually know that's just cuz I've been being fake to relate to them lol....I've never been interested in dating people from my own cultural background...I dated an Italian girl for a short while once upon a time and it was ok for a bit, but she really wanted to pigeon-hole me into this stereotypical idea of a man she had, based on her own family experience and I couldn't do it...

maybe it's the 4th house that might help

i think i've got sag in the 4th

what's your 4th house look like?

makes me happier to adapt... well, besides being mutable

but like in a family setting it's better i feel that shifting

i feel excitement for every change i have to adapt to

I have Sun in the 4th....often wondered if it contributes to my emotional instability contra Taurus lol...

my sun is in the 12th so maybe that explains attraction to cancer energy for you

while mine obviously pisces-ish

also my descendant is Cancer....but I think I got all that out of my system lol...

I think self-interest weights in a lot.

Some levels of elite society will be too busy working and no free time (by choice), then there are elite rent-seekers who's main interest is getting rid of intellectual pursuits, to keep control of their resources and free time together.

Because those elites will be the first have their lives targeted (cast out both by truly upper class/royal class and working class at the same time), if an intellectual idea that has the potential to go critical mass can disrupt the status quo.

I think that’s shortsighted. Obviously it happens everywhere. But it absolutely is more common in organizations that are based in hierarchy and closed societies. Because there is less chance of backlash due to the power structures and shame.

I get that you are being the Devil’s Advocate and have your experience and yes, not all Mormons.

But there is absolutely abuse and it’s not just limited to sexual abuse - anti-gay, racism, sexism, etc built into the culture. To an extreme.

I'd have to see real data though and not just base it on the individual anecdotes. As I said, I agree that certain models of organization can lend themselves more easily to it, but even in those instances, the disposition of individual members within, and especially on top of, the hierarchy will of course determine the behavioral outcome. Authoritarian hierarchical structures are neither good nor bad inherently IMO, and they serve to reinforce belief/behavior that can go in any direction. Even hierarchical groups like this that can go completely off the rails in the wrong direction can have some elements that are radically egalitarian, racially inclusive, etc. (e.g. the Peoples Temple). I've been a member of such a group. There's a huge tendency to paint with a broad brush here. The RCC provides a great example of this as I mentioned. They've got all the tools in place to foster this kind of corruption - from the perceived trustworthiness, sanctity, and authority of the priesthood, elevated at least to the lay people almost to levels of deity in previous generations, to the tendency of everyone from the laity to the higher-ranking individuals within the system to deal with everything entirely in-house, hiding/covering up any appearance of scandal to the outside world. Yet when we look at the actual data, the incidence of abuse isn't really any greater than in Protestant churches with much less hierarchy, data among school teachers from the same time period, etc. And that last point is really pertinent - strong authority and hierarchy can exist in any institution, prisons, schools, social clubs, religions, right down to the nuclear family itself....That's why its essential to actually look at the data....And again, I'm not even denying its there. I'd just have to see it to believe it.

I’ve always met nice Mormons like this. Other denominations too. Christians in general have been people I prefer to keep as friends and I like their values. I’ve had some good luck with the Christians I I’ve befriended they’re usually open-minded and accepting of others.

I know of some Christians, usually evangelists, that try to tell you that non-Christian music has demons in it, that people can be possessed by demons by watching porn, and being gay is a choice. šŸ˜† those are the kind of Christians I can’t deal with.

Very similar experience. Though its cool and trendy to bash religion, I love religions and religious people, see much value in it and have learned a ton from my study of religion, and I consider myself to be a religious person, though I sort of have my own extremely eclectic religion (I think most people do at the end of the day though they focus on core beliefs to have group-identity) that is basically a form of Universalism. I see religion as an adaptive phenomena as more and more anthropologists and evolutionary psychologists are trending towards, with all sorts of benefits, though I may not agree with any particular modality of it. The extreme Charismatic strain of Christianity which is almost akin to forms of paganism in associating a good or bad spirit with every object, interests me as well, and I tend to even be open-minded towards views around demon-possession just based on life experiences. None of my friends of that religious persuasion were ever open to performing an exorcism on me when pressed though lol...

Not bashing it to be cool and trendy šŸ™„

wasn't accusing you...

I think there are legitimate concerns and it’s not a popularity contest. People have been critical of religion because of its thousands of years of damaging effects and atrocities committed in the name of God.
