Scorpio woman Aquarius man....no more hope anymore?

Hi everyone, I'm a scorpio girl who just recently broke up with my aquarius ex. It was just less than two months ago. We dated for eight months and everything was sweet and loving at first although there's a few fights here and there. One day I confronted him about him being cold towards me all that. He did apologize and I confronted him further (bad move I admit) till he said his love for me is getting lesser and lesser due to all the fights we have.It was a big fight and he was saying all the nasty things to me. After a few days of consideration we talked it through face to face about our flaws and what went wrong calmly. For the whole time I held my emotions back but to my surprise he was tearing up and was telling me I'm a good girl and thanked me for telling him all his flaws all that and was sorry for saying all the nasty things to me earlier on. In the end, he ended the relationship although I tried to talk it through with him, telling him we can work on it together. Still, he said no. He told me he doesn't know how to love anymore and wants to be single. He sent me up to my house and we hugged for quite some time and I kissed him for the last time. He was in tears.

After the breakup and less than a week, he texted me to go out together as a friend so I went out with him, still hoping that there's a chance of us getting back together. However I asked him what was his reason of asking me out he said he wants to fulfill his promise (when we were together) of bringing me out on that particular day. I told him there isn't a need to do that because it only makes me feel foolish and him forcing himself to meet me just because of the 'promise' he gave and he said if I'm thinking this way, he can't do anything with it either.

Ever since we broke up our texts became lesser and he was not as enthusiastic in replying me as before. Sometimes he don't even reply or reply very slowly and starts to like some relationship posts on facebook that not keeping someone who is not worth it blah blah blah but he still stalks my instagram story every time. One day I was in needed of help and he was there for me and actually went all the way just to help me. I wasn't sure he was just being polite or what and we catch up with each other through text for 2 days and he went missing on me again.....

Can anyone tell me what is he trying to do?
