Remember, cardio is about the time spent running, not the distance.

In regard to protein supplements, the industry pushes them too much. The body really does not need as much as these supplement places tout. The average American gets plenty of protein in their diet on a daily basis. The general equation is your weight in kg x .8 = grams of protein needed daily. That number can vary, but the higher end of the scale is reserved mostly for elite athletes who are looking for serious performance help with their protein intake. Last I checked, the general rule of thumb was to consume protein within half an hour of your work out for optimal benefit as the muscles do not use as much protein as people think. It goes for carbs.

My sports nutrition professor mentioned something as simple as a bowl of cereal with milk after a work out works well because protein absorbs better post work out when consumed with carbs. Chocolate milk is another one that was suggested as well.

Overall, you can consume mass quantities of protein, but the body only uses what it needs. The rest is merely "expensive" urine, nevermind how rough it can be on the kidneys of long term use. Oh, and you CAN get fat off of it if you consume too much. It's not as easy as overloading carbs, but the body can and will turn excess into fat storage if you're not careful.

I had a coworker who was consuming a SHIT TON of protein because the idiot at GNC told him the wrong equation. He forgot to convert lbs to kg and this guy almost fucked up his kidneys for life because of it.

Moral of the story- don't listen to gym rats or anecdotal advice given by some unqualified sales person.

Fun fact- people in the "medical" field are far less qualified to be giving advice in exercise and nutrition. Unless they have an exercise science background or are an RD, they barely touch on this stuff in med school/nursing school. Just saying.

Note- it's not a shot at anyone in the medical field per se, but people seem to think that medical = all knowing of this topic. The reality is that a lot don't know shit. It's kinda sad since so many current diseases are related to poor diet and lack of any sort of exercise.

Remember, there aren't fat doctors, nurses, medical assistants by coincidence.

Aaaand... *then* I noticed this was the Aries forum. Oops.

Well, we ARE the most active sign. Look how many responses you've gotten!

Anyway, I am also not a fast runner, so my goal is to increase my running speed and do a 10k. I've done 4 5ks now with the 5th on the calendar, and I'll continue to do them as I train for a 10k. I also want to be able to do a full chest-to-floor push-up and am working toward that (albeit not as much as I should be).

Finally, I'd like to add stretching to my routine, but I struggle with it because it feels like a boring waste.

My gym touts everything in the Forks Over Knives doc and I grew up with everything from the other camp being crammed down my throat. Figure if I aim for somewhere in the middle, I can't screw up too bad, but yes... it's the kidney thing I'm concerned about.

I wouldn't worry too much about consuming mass amounts of protein. If you already consume at least the average of like 50 grams daily, all you'd need is to add an extra chicken breast or a shake/some other supplement and you'd be good. It really depends on personal needs though, aka that equation.

It makes me lol the current food market is shoving protein in every damned product now. CHEERIOS have added protein now. Jesus, not everyone is some crazy athlete. They need to be reminded that like 60% of Americans are freaking obese. :/

I can attest to this fact, especially from the nursing staff and EMT I have seen morbidly obese.

You'll be fine. The body doesn't necessarily go after muscle stores unless you're like OUT out of the other resources. It hits the carb stores, then goes to fat, THEN protein.

If you keep a balanced resistance training routine in with your cardio, it should all balance out.

my science trained brain wants to say something, but I'll let you keep talking, you have quite a lot to say about this LOL
