I was once friends with a cancer sun, Aquarius moon, Sagittarius rising girl. :p you could tell she was a sag rising.

Not necessarily, it depends on if the planets are square by degrees.
the square to mars and the ascendant doesn't really denote calmness or conservativeness, it's more of an abrasive aspect: your mars, the planet of
'war' and fighting is at odds with your ascendant. it could make you say or do things that people perceive as overbearing or aggressive, and you may be outwardly angry, which people can sense.

however, your mars is in virgo, which isn't very combative at all.

Another thing that affects the whole chart is the chart ruler, or the planetary ruler of your ascendant. In your case, the chart ruler is Jupiter. What sign and house is your Jupiter in ?
