Can someone explain houses to me?

As the title states the whole houses thing has me confused.

For a while I thought houses corresponded with the signs in order (Aries being 1st house and Pisces being 12th)

But searching online tells me otherwise. If someone could explain it on depth Id appreciate it.

starts from the asc as 1st house and the 2nd house is the next sign after your rising and so on.

Thank you andsbunny. That's what I was looking for. Couldn't figure out where 1st house started.
